67 Year Old Fitness Fan Comments on Senior Health and Fitness ...

When I was younger, I not only had some idea that I was at least a little bit invincible. Even if I overdid something physical, including imbibing German "bier" at the Oktoberfest in Munich, I would feel better soon...er or later.

As I aged, however, the recovery time, not to mention the after effects themselves, lasted longer, even as I did less and less.

I have exercised regularly since 1971, studied health and fitness intensely since 1961, and have written about health and fitness pretty regularly since about 2005. I guess that makes me a little bit of an "expert", anc you would think an expert would follow his own advice.

Well, when it comes to swimming pools, I guess I just lose all sense of time.

My daughter had a pizza/pool party at her house yesterday, and I spent a little time in the water.

At least it "seemed" like a little time!

Actually, I probably did not spend more than about an hour in the pool, and most of the time I just did what seemed to me at least, some lazy back stroke, side stroke (can't do the crawl for love nor money), swam under water a couple of times, but, for the most part, just tred water in the deep end and watched the grandkids.

Didn't feel bad when I got up this morning, and I still don't, but my muscles, which get exercised quite frequently, are letting me know that I did some things I don't normally do...and might have done just a wee tad too much of it.

When we are young, we are bulletproof and able to do a lot more without regretting it.

When we get older, we are not so tough and are prone to a lot more aches, pains, and potential injuries.

I feel pretty good about what I did yesterday, but, despite being an avid exerciser and fitness enthusiast, I can tell that I used muscles that don't normally get worked so intensely for that long a time...and I feel it.

Now, I exercise a lot and still managed to pay a price for overextending myself while having a good time on a fun Saturday afternoon. If you are new to exercise, or are entering into a new exercise program, take it easy. The unprepared body, especially the older one, needs to make changes rationally and at a measured pace.
