EYES ON LONDON: Big night approaches for Phelps

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

BIG NIGHT FOR PHELPS

After missing the medal podium in his first swim in London and taking a surprising silver in the 4x100 freestyle relay, Michael Phelps is back for two more shots at another gold medal on Tuesday. He will try to defend his title in the 200-meter butterfly and also swim in the 4x200 freestyle final.

Phelps had the fifth-fastest time in the 200 fly preliminaries on Monday, and he feels ready to go again.

"I'm pretty happy with that swim," Phelps said. "That's all I needed it to be."

'STUPID RULE'

"In this system it's a shame that the all-around champion doesn't get to compete in the finals at the Olympics because of a stupid rule." ? John Geddert, coach of reigning world champion Jordyn Wieber, who will miss a shot at Olympic gold in Thursday's Olympic gymnastics all-around finals because international rules allow only two competitors per country.

JUDO GEM

Marti Malloy earned the second-ever Olympic judo medal for an American woman, and she was ready.

She proudly displayed the bronze prize for photographers and offered to strike the traditional pose.

"I've been working on my bite," she said Monday night. "I'm not sure if it should be mean or happy."

The 26-year-old Malloy got into judo when her parents enrolled her in a free class on a military base when she was growing up in Oak Harbor, Wash. She went on to compete at San Jose State University, and 92-year-old coach Yoshihiro Uchida made the trip to London to see her big win.

Malloy's three brothers also learned judo when they were kids, and she said she felt fortunate to be involved with the sport.

"Judo is one of those sports that in the U.S. obviously isn't very well known but is the thing that will teach you the most about discipline, respect, hard work, dedication," she said. "I know all sports are like that but judo especially, those are the ideals that the sport is built around."

RATINGS WIN

The Nielsen company says 36 million people watched NBC's Olympic coverage Sunday night, the biggest audience for the second night of a non-U.S. summer Olympics competition since TV began covering them in 1960.

Counting the opening ceremonies on Friday, an average of 35.8 million people have tuned in for the three nights. That's well above the 30.6 million who watched the first three nights in Beijing in 2008 and considerably more than the 24 million who saw the first three nights of the Athens games of 2004.

STRICT MUM

Talk about strict parenting.

New Zealand kayaker Mike Dawson made the semifinals of the kayak slalom at the Olympics despite being given a two-second penalty by his mother Kay ? who is a judge at the games.

Dawson touched gate five when going down the 18-gate Olympic course on Sunday, and his mother didn't hesitate to penalize her son. It was one of two two-second penalties Dawson received, but he still advanced to Wednesday's semis.

Dawson joked in an email to The Associated Press on Monday that he was tempted to get his coach to put in a protest "about that particular judge."

It would have made dinnertime at the Dawsons even more awkward. His coach is father Les.

"That would've had all sorts of ramifications after the Olympics and besides, I like mum's cooking too much!" Dawson joked in his message to AP.

___

TWITTER INSULT INVESTIGATED

The Twitter insult against British diver Tom Daley has attracted the attention of police.

Daley's father died of brain cancer a year ago and the 18-year-old Olympian had hoped win a medal "for myself and my dad." But he finished finishing fourth, out of medal contention, in the 10-meter synchronized platform with teammate Pete Waterfield.

Afterward, Twitter user (at)Rileyy69 sent him this message: "You let your dad down i hope you know that."

Dorset Police tweeted tonight: "Regarding tweets to (at)tomdaley1994 - we are aware of the issue and we are actively looking into it."

In Britain, tweeting messages considered menacing, offensive or indecent can lead to prosecution.

POTUS WATCHING?

We know that FLOTUS (first lady of the United States Michelle Obama) has cheered on the Olympians from the stands in London. But what about POTUS (president of the U.S.), who stayed home?

The White House couldn't say Monday whether President Barack Obama has been watching but thought it likely.

"I know that he was looking forward to the Olympics starting so I'd be surprised if 72 hours into it he hadn't seen it yet," deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said as Obama flew Air Force One to New York for an evening fundraiser. Campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki joked that the Olympics would be forced on to all the plane's TVs to improve the odds.

Here's what could be seen in the back cabin: Korea v. Denmark in handball, and weightlifters from Indonesia and Turkey. No word on what Obama was doing up front.

HE'S NO SLOUCH

Nick Thoman almost left swimming after 2008, thinking then it might be time to try something else.

Now an Olympic silver medalist ? he and Matt Grevers went 1-2 in the men's 100 backstroke for the United States on Monday night ? Thoman is headed to school again, starting next spring.

"I didn't actually graduate college," Thoman said. "So I'm going to go back to school and get my degree so that I can do something with my life."

Whoa.

Do something with his life? Did he not notice the silver medal dangling from his neck? Everyone in the room giggled anxiously, waiting to see if Thoman would provide the punch line.

And he did.

"Something else," Thoman said, as the giggles turned into full-blown laughter.

NOISY NEIGHBORS

When the public address announcer at the Horse Guards Parade beach volleyball venue wants to get the crowd riled up, he reminds them that the prime minister's residence is virtually next door.

"Ladies and Gentlemen," he told the crowd at 10 p.m. during a break in the second of four Monday night matches, "I've just heard that prime minister David Cameron, or Dave as I call him, is trying to get a good night's sleep at 10 Downing Street."

The crowd booed.

He added: "He's just checked into a hotel."

HE SHOOTS, HE SCORES!

Happy Gilmore, you have your archery equivalent.

British archer Larry Godfrey delighted the crowd Monday as he celebrated reaching the men's individual 70-meter quarterfinals at Lord's cricket ground.

Adorned in aviator shades and bleached highlights, Godfrey emulated batting a six ? the equivalent of a home run in baseball ? after advancing.

"I thought it would be a bit of fun," he explained.

The 198-year-old venue is considered "The Home of Cricket."

The Bristol-based archer is hoping that home soil will be the trick for his first medal in three Olympics.

Your Home Improvement Confusion Cleared With This Advice ...

Don?t ignore small rust and mold problems. These are common in many older homes, and can quickly become widespread, large problems. Tackling them when they are small is quick and easy. Waiting until they?re big problems can be costly and time intensive. A little bleach works wonders on small mold problems. Small rust problems can often be sanded away.

When selecting a home improvement contractor, interview each potential company and find out more about who they are. Have they done renovations on homes like yours? Have they done a similar project as far as scope and price? Take a look at their portfolio to see if the work they do will work in your renovation.

When you hire a contractor to work on a home improvement project, make sure that he is holding a current license and that he has insurance for his employees. This is important for your protection, in case you have a legal dispute about the quality of the work. In addition, if his employees are not covered by his insurance, you might be financially responsible for any injuries that an employee incurs, while he is on your premises.

If you?re looking for a low cost way to improve the look of your home?s interior, add a fresh coat of paint. Make sure you choose a neutral color. Dark or drab colors can make a room feel oppressive and confining. Painting with neutral colors will give rooms a fresh, airy feeling of openness.

If your front door has to endure torrents of hot weather, make sure to choose an oil based paint instead of latex to prevent the paint from peeling off. A peeling front door is rather unsightly, so invest some money in high quality oil based paint to keep your door looking fresh in the heat.

Looking for a way to improve your home? Instead of hiring an interior designer to decorate your home for you, buy home decor magazines and books to use as inspiration. Give yourself some time to learn. Take some design elements from pictures you see, and use other people?s ideas to help spark your creativity. Spend the money you would on an interior designer on your furniture and accessories instead.

If you need to hire someone, get personal recommendations from friends, family and neighbors who have had work done in the recent past. This is a good way to gather information about contractors who can do the job. When you get quotes, ask that they are itemized so you can compare the contractors apples to apples.

Smoke detectors are required for safety in your home. Many homes only put them in certain areas. You can increase the safety in your home, by installing additional detectors in places like bathrooms, kitchens and basements. These areas can sometimes be overlooked, though prone to fires as much or more than the rest of the house.

Make sure that your contractor checks on the building code, whenever you make a major change to your house! Often, people will make sweeping changes to their house just because they feel like it or because they feel it will make their home more grand. If you make a change that causes a safety issue, you could end up in major trouble down the line.

When thinking about doing home improvements, consider refinancing your mortgage to help pay for the renovations. With the lower rate and lower payment, you can offset many of the costs of remodeling with just this simple tip. After refinancing, you might also want to consider taking out a home improvement loan against the value of the home.

You can see now that there are very simple steps that you can take right away to increase the overall worth and appearance of your home, even if you are operating on a shoestring budget! Put some of these suggestions into practice for a more attractive and manicured home.

California-to-Vegas bullet train seeks loan

Private developers of a high-speed train that would connect California to Las Vegas are hoping the Obama administration will provide a loan to jump start its construction, the San Jose Mercury News reports.

Though the project is still at least a decade away from being realized for the Bay Area, the $8 billion-plus project could also one day connect to Los Angeles. The train, which has been renamed XpressWest, would be able to travel 150 mph, carrying partyers to Sin City.

The project is being primarily bankrolled by Vegas hotel developer Tony Marnell and supported by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Southern California politicians, the Mercury News reports.

How hot is it this summer? One of the three hottest since 1950 so far.

Temperatures in June and the first week of July make this summer so far one of the top-three in the continental United States since 1950, say meteorologists.

As the month draws to an end, it's clear that July continued the trend for unusually warm weather for the United States.

Temperatures in June and the first week of July qualified this summer so far as one of the top-three hottest summers in the continental United States since 1950, said Bob Smerbeck, a senior meteorologist at Accuweather.com.

"I think it has a chance to get into the top three whether it is the top one remains to be seen, we still have the rest of July and August," Smerbeck told LiveScience.

An article in the news suggesting this month was on track to surpass the all-time record set in July 1936 is incorrect, Jake Crouch, a climate scientist here at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center, told LiveScience in an email. That statement, which appeared in USA Today, was the result of an inaccurate interpretation of weather data, he wrote. [Dry and Dying: Images of Summer Drought]

"However, July has been warmer than average, and it is likely that the month will conclude with July temperatures above the 20th-century average. At this time we cannot say with any certainty how much above average the July temperatures [it] will be," Crouch wrote.

Things could be worse. The core of heat in the middle part of the country has not expanded countrywide. Although heat waves have traveled eastward over the upper Great Lakes, through the Northeast and down into parts of the Southeast, they have not been sustained, Smerbeck?said.

Since the beginning of June, the west coast is tracking at just below-average temperatures.

In June, a core of heat was centered over the high plains and extended to the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. In July, this atmospheric system shifted east over the Midwest from Omaha to St. Louis and up towards Chicago, he said.

The jet stream, a band of high-altitude westerly winds, plays a role in this weather pattern by acting as a boundary between cool, northern air and warmer southern air. It was been situated over northern California, then across the northern plains near the Canadian border before dipping southeast over the northeastern part of the country in late July, Smerbeck said.

The jet stream was deflected to the north over the center of the country by a high-pressure system, which is responsible for the core of heat. In this system, air sinks and warms, exacerbating the drought conditions.

Storms occur along the periphery of this high-pressure system, and they are responsible for bringing precipitation and cooler weather to areas to the north and east.

Precipitation over the southern Rockies and southwestern desert, particularly Arizona, has helped these regions catch up after dry conditions earlier, he said.

2 NATO service members killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The NATO military coalition on Sunday said two service members were killed in an insurgent attack in the west of the country.

The military alliance known as ISAF didn't provide further details. NATO also did not provide the nationalities of the dead. The deaths bring the number of international service members killed in Afghanistan so far this month to at least 44.

The latest casualties underscored the volatility of Afghanistan as NATO scales back its operations, planning to hand over security responsibility to local forces by the end of 2014.

The coalition also denied as "incorrect" Pakistani claims that its military had informed NATO 52 times in recent months that insurgents were crossing from Pakistan into Afghanistan.

"Whenever the Pakistani military has requested assistance, ISAF immediately dispatched the appropriate force to deal with the issue," the coalition said in a statement. "In the spirit of recent improving relations with the Pakistani military, ISAF will continue to take every Pakistani military report of cross-border movement very seriously and will assist whenever and wherever possible."

Pakistan's ambassador to the United States on Saturday claimed that Pakistan had reported 52 times to NATO in recent months when militants were spotted crossing into Afghan territory.

Sherry Rehman made the comments during the Aspen Security Forum being held in Colorado. She spoke via video teleconference.

The United States has criticized Pakistan for not doing enough to crack down on militants sheltering in safe havens in that country's lawless tribal areas, which border Afghanistan. They include the al-Qaida affiliated Haqqani network thought to be mostly in the North Waziristan region.

"We have many shared interests, including our respective commitments for coordinated action against the cross-border attacks of the Haqqani terrorists from North Waziristan who threaten Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the region,' the NATO statement said.

Earlier, Afghan officials said insurgents shot and killed a government official in eastern Afghanistan.

The Wardak province governor's office said in a statement that the head of volatile Chak district was driving to his office Sunday when gunmen overtook his car. They shot both Mohammad Ismail Wafa and his adult son. The son was wounded.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message. The Taliban regularly target Afghan government officials, whom they label collaborators with international forces.

Early HIV Treatment Could Save Livelihoods, As Well As Lives

By Katherine Harmon
(Click here for the original article)

People can work more when their ailments are treated. And HIV is no exception. Adults who tested positive for HIV in Uganda but had a less severe infection were able to work more hours per week, and their kids were more likely to be in school, according to findings presented July 26 at the 2012 International AIDS Conference in Washington, D.C.

If this correlation holds up in further research, more widespread testing and earlier treatment could mean greater earning potential for individuals--and, especially for some countries in Africa where HIV infection rates top 15 percent of the adult population, a better economic outlook for entire regions.

Earlier research suggested that people who take antiretroviral therapy (ART) to manage their HIV feel better and are able to work more. But Harsha Thirumurthy, a health economist at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Gillings School of Global Public Health, wanted to know more specifically if an individual's CD4 (helper T immune cell) counts correlate with how much that person is able to work. If people miss a lot more work not just when they have full-blown AIDS, but even when their counts are only moderately low, it would be more reason to test people more widely--and start them on medication sooner.

Thirumurthy's group launched a weeklong public health campaign in a rural Uganda town of about 3,000 people. Most residents worked on farms. The labor is physically demanding, and illness often prevents a farmer from tending the fields. Not only does that directly impact a family's livelihood, it has an effect on children. When adults are not healthy enough to work, they often recruit any household children between the ages of 12 and 18, who then miss school.

Of the people who were tested, about 7.8 percent were HIV positive, and their CD4 status had a surprisingly large impact on how much they were able to work. Uninfected adults typically have CD4 counts from 500 to more than 1,000 (per cubic millimeter). This number falls during an HIV infection; the lower the value, generally, the worse a person's health. HIV-positive adults in the study with CD4 counts below 350 (the threshold for receiving antiviral treatment in Uganda), had "a big drop off" in hours worked each week, Thirumurthy says. Those who had CD4 counts below 200 worked, on average, 5.8 fewer days a month--the equivalent of more than a full workweek--than those with CD4 counts above 500. "The difference between those with high and low counts is bigger than we thought," Thirumurthy says.

Teenage children living in households where an adult had a CD4 count below 350 were 15 percent less likely to go to school. Missing these crucial years of education could lead, in turn, to reduced earning potential for them in the future. The research was funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (at the National Institutes of Health) and was part of the larger Sustainable East Africa Research on Community Health (SEARCH) Collaboration.

The study did not ascertain exactly why some people were less able to work, but the most likely culprits are other infections that sicken those with HIV-weakened immune systems more easily. Other factors might include mental and emotional strain and general malaise.

Other studies also have found that ARTs can improve a person's ability to make a living. Earlier this month, Sydney Rosen of Boston University's School of Public Health and her colleagues presented their research on how people on ARTs in South Africa seem to be doing both physically and economically over time. After five years of therapy, the proportion employed increased from 39 percent to 56 percent (compared to three months before starting therapy). The proportion who reported that their illness impaired their daily activities decreased from 42 percent to 4 percent.

The novelty of the Uganda study was the use of CD4 counts. But there is a caveat: the data come from a single point in time, rather than from following the individuals over a period. And that, Rosen says, introduces the possibility that confounding factors skewed the results. For instance, someone who is proactive in getting tested and obtaining treatment might be a ?person who is likely to work more hours a week, anyway.

Even the choice of testing site might make the findings less applicable to other areas, Thirumurthy says. His team sampled a rural population where most adults had access to work through farming. In a large urban setting, such as Johannesburg or Kampala, where unemployment is high across the board, HIV status and CD4 counts might have a weaker correlation with how much a person is able to work.

Nevertheless, Rosen says, all of the recent studies "point to the same conclusion: that treatment is associated with better employment outcomes."

Thirumurthy and his colleagues are currently planning a five-year controlled trial to follow up and study this correlation over time. The trial will study multiple communities, some of which will continue receiving standard care (with treatment starting when CD4 counts dip below 350) and others of which will receive earlier treatment. They will then be able to track whether changes in an individual's CD4 status impacts economic status. These longer studies, Rosen notes, will check whether "starting treatment will forestall some of the negative impacts of [low] CD4 counts on employment." With more detailed data, the researchers should be able to provide more information about long-term health and economic gains of people living longer and potentially working more to measure against the cost of treatment.

A secondary lesson of the work by Thirumurthy and his colleagues was the impressive community response. During the weeklong campaign, 74 percent of the area's adults participated in testing. The program included testing and treatment for HIV as well as other infectious and noninfectious diseases. Nearly half of the people who tested positive for HIV had not previously been diagnosed. With such a large turnout rate, too, Thirumurthy and his colleagues also "were able to learn something about the entire population of HIV-infected adults" in an area, rather than just a subset as in other studies.

"There's so much interest in identifying people early--and possibly implementing early treatment, which is not the national policy yet" in Uganda, Thirumurthy says. Along with recent research showing that treatment can limit the infection's spread, the reasons to start therapy early seem to be growing.

I am interested, but what is the point?

Is it just to be a free-for-all, or will there be a plot of some sort?

Chick-fil-A PR Chief Dies as Company Battles Controversy

Don Perry, head spokesman for fast-food chain Chick-fil-A died ?suddenly? Friday morning, the company confirmed Friday.

Perry has been with the Atlanta-based company for 29 years, last holding the position of VP of public relations, a Chick-fil-A spokesperson wrote in an e-mail to Mashable. The spokesperson was unable to comment on the cause of death.

Chick-fil-A is under fire from gay rights? activists after its CEO, Dan Cathy, voiced his support of the ?traditional family? and the ?Bibical definition of the family unit.? He later added, ?I think we are inviting God?s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, ?We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.??

Activists have called for a boycott of the restaurant chain, and the mayors of Boston, Chicago and San Francisco have criticized Cathy?s statements publicly. In a letter to Cathy, Boston Mayor Tom Menino wrote, ?There is no place for discrimination on Boston?s Freedom Trail and no place for your company alongside it.? The Jim Henson Co. pulled its Muppet toys from Chick-fil-a?s kids? meals.

Last week, Perry e-mailed out an official response to the controversy, stating that the company?s plans were to ?leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.? The company?s policy, he wrote, ?is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect ? regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender.?

Highways to Hell

It
The era of the 1920s in boom town New York City with everything thrown in, prohibition, flappers, bootlegging, short skirts, cars, gangsters, corruption of the law, and of course the most lavish and insane parties ever!

Of course the history books have just happened to forget mentioning a key occurrence during this era. The rise of supernatural encounters as well as the new segment in the police department, I hope spared from bribes. The documents recovered *Stolen* by reporters have only found out the name of the group S.L.A.Y.E.R or in longer terms Supernatural Law Attorneys and Eradication Regiment.

Apparently this unit has been broken down into sections. The *Attorneys* are responsible for keeping tabs on those in contact with the supernatural, and will intervene if the situation gets out of hand with more violent methods of persuasion. Suave assassins in suits would be the correct term for this group

The Eradication Regiment has more direct approach. Being assigned targets daily to help prevent the less than peaceful supernatural creatures from overpopulation. Unlike their suited counter parts, these people aren't shy about making their intentions clear from the very start meaning if you are an average human citizens go in the other direction when the man next you pull out a chainsaw.

Of course what kind of 1920s would this be if there were no gangsters? Born into the cradle with whiskey nearby the families of New York have been more than welcoming of the new neighbors, providing them with food, shelter, and anything else a creature would need. In exchange for their services perfected by their skills.

Not all the supernatural residents are thrilled with interactions with the human populace, some keep out of sight until needing to feed on something, be it a soul, blood, flesh, or even in one odd documented case by a Attorney...a creature was found feeding on cat food?

This is just a small idea that turned into a storm of ideas as I began thinking out this. So interested leave a comment, pm me? Or if you think this is a terrible idea let me down gently with constructive criticism.

Tips: Ed Yong's On The Origin Of Science Writers

Tips is a series which aims to provide young and early-career science writers with, well, tips to aid them in their budding careers. The series will attempt to link out to existing resources available online.

Today, we feature On the Origin of Science Writers, a blog post or rather, a comment thread, initiated by popular science writer, Ed Yong on his blog. The thread showcases a variety of pathways to becoming a science writer written exclusively by science writers themselves?150 of them.

?

?How do I become a science writer?? That?s the question! When it pops into your head it might not be easy to figure out a decent answer. But worry no more as Ed Yong and 150 other science writers come to the rescue.

In On the Origin of Science Writers, Ed asks science writers who have experience in the field, two questions:

  1. How did you make your start?
  2. What advice would you give to people in the same position?

Until now, 150 science writers have answered these questions. They include Carl Zimmer, Marc Henderson, John Rennie, Steve Silberman, Christopher Mims. It?s a very diverse bunch and you will find writers who tend to specialise in different fields of science as well, all happily giving advice.

The comments are diverse as the writers who?ve contributed to thread. Of different styles, lengths, etcetera, they are catered to a variety of potential science writers.

Apart from being a wealth of advice though, the thread is also inspiring. Reading how such great science writers started out will surely inspire you. And, if they could do it, so can you.

Here?s a snapshot of the comments:

Carl Zimmer:

I backed into my job by fortunate accident. As a kid, science was an important part of my nerdy regime, but I never actually considered becoming a scientist. In college I was preoccupied with writing, cranking out so-so short stories and interning for a local paper one summer. But I still had time for physics and a few other science classes. A couple years out of college, intent on finding a magazine job, I took a test to be a copy editor at Discover. I proved to be a terrible copy editor, but I was allowed to cling to a job, fact-checking and then starting to write short pieces. A very lucky break: I was hooked.

I talked in more detail about becoming a science writer in 2009 at the University of British Columbia. UBC made a podcast of the talk, which, if you are interested, you can listen to here:?http://bit.ly/ZimmerUBC

Carl regularly contributes articles to the New York Times and Discover magazine among others, blogs at The Loom and has written several books including Microcosm and The Tangled Bank.

Steve Silberman (excerpt):

I took a somewhat unusual path to becoming a science writer.? Like many of my peers, I was fascinated with science as a kid, but a better way to say it would be that I was fascinated by the universe and how it works. I read cloud atlases and books on weather avidly, pestered the adults around me with questions constantly, and sent away for little kits in the mail to make your own rubber balls. I abused chemistry sets and lit fires in the backyard with Estes model-rocket engines. The Edmund Scientific catalog ? with its thrilling pictures of Van de Graaf generators, telescopes, and Geiger counters ? was my bible. Many people assumed I would become a scientist when I grew up.

At the same time, however, I loved language.? Before I was even old enough to talk, my late father taught me to love words by reading James Joyce?s ?Ulysses? aloud while carrying me on his shoulders. As an English professor at a state college in New Jersey, he showed generations of inner-city students how to see their own struggles reflected in the travails of Dickens? textile workers and the crew of Melville?s ?Pequod.? [...]

Christopher Mims (excerpt):

I started in college. I wrote a ?humor? column for my school paper?s editorial section. It was (sarcastically) called Smoking is Cool and it was mostly me ranting about things that enraged me. I was so ignorant of journalism that I never realized that writing editorials disqualified me from writing news, not that I was terribly interested in doing that ? it was much more fun to just make things up. (Now that we have journalists who also blog, and activist journalists, and Journolist and Fox News and all the rest, no one even pretends to be objective anymore so I guess I got the last laugh on that one.)

Through dumb luck my (pre-assigned) freshman advisor happened to run her own undergraduate science initiative, so one summer she hired me to be a science writer. All I did all day long was interview scientists and write up the results as Q&A?s and as-told-tos. It was great practice. [...]

Head off to the On the Origin of Science Writers to read Ed?s own explanation of this thread and all the comments.

Climate change linked to ozone loss: May result in more skin cancer

ScienceDaily (July 26, 2012) ? For decades, scientists have known that the effects of global climate change could have a potentially devastating impact across the globe, but Harvard researchers say there is now evidence that it may also have a dramatic impact on public health.

As reported in a paper published in the July 27 issue of Science, a team of researchers led by James G. Anderson, the Philip S. Weld Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry, are warning that a newly-discovered connection between climate change and depletion of the ozone layer over the U.S. could allow more damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation to reach the Earth's surface, leading to increased incidence of skin cancer.

In the system described by Anderson and his team, water vapor injected into the stratosphere by powerful thunderstorms converts stable forms of chlorine and bromine into free radicals capable of transforming ozone molecules into oxygen. Recent studies have suggested that the number and intensity of such storms are linked to climate changes, Anderson said, which could in turn lead to increased ozone loss and greater levels of harmful UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface, and potentially higher rates of skin cancer.

"If you were to ask me where this fits into the spectrum of things I worry about, right now it's at the top of the list," Anderson said. "What this research does is connect, for the first time, climate change with ozone depletion, and ozone loss is directly tied to increases in skin cancer incidence, because more ultraviolet radiation is penetrating the atmosphere."

Unfortunately, Anderson said, we don't know how this process will evolve over time.

"We don't know what the development of this has been -- we don't have measurements of this deep convective injection of water into the stratosphere that go back in time," Anderson said.

"But the best guide for the evolution of this is to look at the research that connects climate change with severe storm intensity and frequency, and it's clear that there is a developing scientific case that the addition of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere is increasing climate change, and in turn driving severe storm intensity and frequency."

While it's impossible to know how many skin cancer cases may be related to ozone depletion over the U.S., the link between ozone loss and increased incidence of the disease has been extensively studied, Anderson said.

"There has been a major effort by the medical community to define the relationship between decreases in ozone and the subsequent increases in skin cancer," he said. "The answer is quite clear -- if you multiply the fractional decrease in ozone protection by about three, you get the increase in skin cancer incidence. There are 1 million new skin cancer cases in the U.S. annually -- it's the most common form of cancer, and it's one that's increasing in spite of all the medical research devoted to it."

But it isn't only humans who have to worry about the effects of increased UV radiation.

Many crops, particularly staple crops grown for human consumption -- such as wheat, soybeans and corn -- could suffer damage to their DNA, Anderson said.

Ironically, Anderson said, the discovery that climate change might be driving ozone loss happened virtually by accident.

Though they had worked since the mid-1980s to investigate ozone depletion in the Arctic and Antarctic, by the early-2000s, Anderson's team had turned their attention to climate studies. In particular, they were working to understand how the convective clouds -- updrafts that cause storms to build high into the sky -- contribute to the creation of cirrus clouds.

"It was in the process of looking at that mechanism that we came to this unexpected observation -- that the convective clouds in these storm systems over the U.S. are reaching far deeper into the stratosphere that we ever expected," Anderson said.

While earlier tests performed in the Arctic had demonstrated that water vapor was a key component in creating the "free-radical" compounds that break down ozone, Anderson said the latest finding is much more troubling, because it suggests the process can happen at much higher temperatures than initially suspected.

"The bottom line is that if you increase the water vapor concentration, you actually increase the threshold temperature for executing this chemical conversion -- from the stable forms of chlorine to the free radical form," Anderson said. "If the amount of water vapor and the temperature over the U.S. satisfies the conditions for rapid conversion of inorganic chlorine to this free-radical form, we've got a real problem, because the chemistry is identical to what we previously demonstrated is taking place over the Arctic."

Also surprising, he added, was the realization that, to throw water vapor high into the atmosphere, storms needn't be unusually large.

"We have hundreds of measurements world-wide addressing the photochemical structure controlling ozone, but only a limited number of flights over the U.S. in summer," he said. "The flights were studying average storms over the middle-west, and of the 20 observations we made over the U.S., about half demonstrated significant penetration into the stratosphere," he said.

The next step in the research, Anderson said, is to conduct a series of tests to confirm whether the free-radical form of chlorine and bromine are present in the stratosphere at significantly elevated levels in the presence of convectively-injected water vapor.

"In my mind, this is not just a broad public health issue," Anderson said. "This is about actually being able to step out into the sunlight -- it's about your children and your children's health. Of course, we don't know how rapidly the frequency and intensity of these storms will increase, so we can't place a time scale on this problem, but the core issue here is quite straightforward and simple, because we understand this chemistry."
