NCAA to reconsider Boise St. football sanctions

Updated: June 29, 2012, 4:09 PM ET

Associated Press

BOISE, Idaho -- The NCAA said Friday it will reconsider scholarship sanctions imposed on Boise State's football program.

In a 25-page decision, the NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Committee concluded that the scholarship penalty announced last September, in addition to Boise State's self-imposed sanctions, was "excessive such that it constituted an abuse of discretion."

Boise State's voluntary measures included three fewer scholarships for the 2011-12 school year and fewer preseason practices. The NCAA added scholarship reductions from 85 to 82 through the 2013-14 school year and limited contact during spring practice.

The university appealed the additional sanctions for the football program, arguing that the NCAA's history of scholarship reduction penalties was inconsistent with penalties imposed in the case of Boise State. The appeals committee agreed.

"Of the 10 cases that involved the FBS and reductions of football grants-in-aid over the past five years, only two had reductions of grants-in-aid in football as great or greater than those imposed in this case," the panel found.

The appeals committee upheld the spring practice penalty while remanding the scholarship sanctions back to the infractions committee for reconsideration.

"We are pleased that the Appeals Committee agreed in the case of the scholarships. We will await a decision from the Infractions Committee on the final scholarship penalty," Boise State president Bob Kustra said.

Boise State has not been given a timeline for when a new decision will reached, said university spokesman Frank Zang.

The NCAA cited major violations by the football program and other sports last year when placing Boise State on probation for three years and imposing other sanctions. The violations occurred over a five-year period.

At the time, Kustra said Boise State's rapid growth over the last decade, from an upstart Division II program into a perennial Top 25 team, likely outstripped the school's capacity to keep tabs on its compliance with NCAA rules.

Kustra, who fired athletic director Gene Bleymaier in August, said he'd hoped the self-imposed sanctions would have been enough to avoid probation. Boise State appealed the football portion of the NCAA sanctions, while accepting the punishment placed on its tennis and track programs.

Boise State has since revamped its NCAA compliance efforts, hiring additional staff and implementing an educational program, the university said. The school has also made changes to its student-athlete handbook, while heightening training and awareness programs, officials said.

"The entire process has deepened our commitment to compliance, resulted in tangible changes to our program and created a greater awareness of the NCAA rules," athletic director Mark Coyle said in a statement.

Wisconsin Agency's 'Deserve to Die' Campaign Puts Lung Cancer in ...

A funny thing happens when you plaster U.S. cities with posters saying certain types of people "deserve to die." Namely, those people get a bit upset. Wisconsin agency Laughlin Constable and the Lung Cancer Alliance learned that this week when they launched teaser ads with messages like "Hipsters Deserve to Die" and "Cat Lovers Deserve to Die." The posters sparked news coverage in cities like Chicago, where some residents reportedly tore down some of the ads in anger. The lung cancer advocacy campaign, actually called "No One Deserves to Die," was supposed to be revealed at midnight today, but the full site seems to have gone live Wednesday after reporters began covering the public's reaction.?"We knew that one would be polarizing," Laughlin Constable strategy vp Denise Kohnke told a Milwaukee TV station. One problem with the campaign is that the message is a bit difficult to grasp in short bites of copy. It's better explained on the website?(be sure to scroll all the way down), which describes how lung cancer victims are unfairly stigmatized as having brought the disease on themselves. The result is that, despite being the "deadliest cancer," lung cancer is the least funded in terms of research. "Lung cancer doesn't discriminate, and neither should you," the site says. "Help put an end to the stigma and the disease." That's a bold and socially complex message, one that's tough to decipher from any ad, much less one that says ?(modern social archetype) deserves to die." But what do you think? Will it work?

professional power equipment More Details about professional power equipment here.

A professional powerbroom can be a valuable piece of equipment in the arsenal of tools that landscapers use when tending to commercial properties. This piece of professional power equipment is a type of sweeper with a rotating cylinder that can move large amounts of debris or other yard waste quickly and efficiently. There are several reasons why a landscaper might want to use a powerbroom when taking care of a property.

Speed

One of the most notable advantages to come from using a professional powerbroom is the speed and efficiency that the tool provides. The spinning action of the brushes can move large and small debris much more effectively than a standard broom. The construction of the device also gives the user more control over where stones, yard waste or snow will be deposited so that multiple passes over the same area are unnecessary. This increase in speed can help a landscaper to clean up faster so that adequate time can be spent performing the more detailed work that is required to maintain a property.

Safety For Residents

The ability of a professional powerbroom to move rocks, sticks and other pieces of debris can create a safer environment for homeowners and other residents who will be using the property. Small obstacles that could cause accidents or that could interfere with other pieces of lawn care equipment can be brushed into a safe location where it will not cause a problem. This type of professional power equipment can even be used to de-thatch areas before they grow out of control.

Versatility

A professional powerbroom has a variety of different uses throughout the entire year. The broom can be used on driveways and paved paths. It can also be used to clear clippings and sticks from a lawn after it has been groomed. The broom is capable of removing powdery and unpacked snow in the winter months. Several models allow the user to adjust the angle of the spinning head and the height of the brush. The actual sweeping cylinder can be replaced with a number of other attachments for added flexibility so that larger, smaller or more difficult pieces of debris can be removed.

Professional Finish

The use of a professional powerbroom adds a very clean and polished appearance to any property. It can be used on a daily basis to keep pathways clear. It can also be used after regular lawn care to remove anything that is left over. This attention to the small details on a daily or weekly basis can give a property the professionally maintained appearance that residents desire.

Metropolis - Arts & Entertainment | Squarepusher

Courtesy of Beatink

Squarepusher is back. Or maybe he never left??

Tom Jenkinson?s new album Ufabulum is being billed as a return to pure electronic music. ?I said it on the phone to someone at Warp,? he explains ruefully in an interview following his headlining appearance at this spring?s SonarSound Tokyo festival. ?I was unwittingly supplying this horrible catchphrase for which I?m now receiving the punishment. I think they liked it as a way of getting some sort of interest going in the people who buy records. But the idea of a pure form of music is actually distasteful to me. If you were to aim at purifying music you?d have ruled out the way music evolves, which is cross-pollination.?

What Jenkinson was getting at, he insists, is a return to purely electronic forms of composition after several albums that featured his work on the bass and other such, erm, archaic instruments. ?The motivation was to get away from this tendency in my recent work to move further toward live instruments,? he says. ?It was starting to feel like a bit of a prison.?

Out on seminal electronica imprint Warp, Ufabulum bursts with the restless energy fans have come to expect from Squarepusher?s 15-year career. Lingering rhythmic elements of the experimental breakbeats scene from which Squarepusher emerged provide the framework for a cavalcade of dystopic bloops and bleeps set against ecstatic synth washes and glistening chords.

I ask if the return to electronic music signals a return to ?future music.?

?My kneejerk answer is that it?s more your concern than mine,? he responds. ?I don?t see any necessary link between electronics and the future. I suppose yes at the dawn of electronic music, people saw it as a break from the past. But now it?s so integrated into the musical vocabulary that it?s hard to see it as futuristic in itself. I choose to use electronic means of expression, but not exclusively. I?m as concerned with older instruments?and am still interested in what can be done with them.?

But don?t certain passages seem to mock the current commercial dubstep scene, noting the contempt in which it is held by many longtime electronica artists? ?Why shouldn?t humor enter into music?? he asks. ?But I?m not aware specifically of the current electronica boom. There?s a longstanding prejudice among people who follow more cult forms of music,? he continues, ?that popularity is inherently bad. It happened in the ?90s when drum and bass entered popular music, and stopped being underground. But I don?t involve myself. I?d quite happily sell millions of records.?

Japan is one place where Squarepusher?s electronic music seems to go down a charm. His trippy new setup featuring an LED helmet that he describes as ?a quantized window into my mind?s eye? will no doubt be prominently featured at this fall?s resuscitated Electraglide festival. The on-off event was launched a decade ago by promoter Beatink, the sister to Beat Records, which distributes Warp in Japan.
?It?s odd,? he says recalling his first visit to the old Liquidroom in 1997. ?I?ve only been here five or six times, but my music seems to make sense in Japan, which is quite rewarding. As I?ve said I don?t pride myself on my music being difficult, so to reach a wide level of recognition here is new and quite interesting.?

Electraglide. Makuhari Messe, Nov 21 (listing).

Researchers delve into airborne particulates

ScienceDaily (June 27, 2012) ? For the first time, Lawrence Livermore researchers and international collaborators have peered into the makeup of complex airborne particulate matter so small that it can be transported into human lungs -- usually without a trace.

The structure of micron-size particulate matter is important in a wide range of fields from toxicology to climate science (tobacco smoke and oil smoke particles are typically one micron in size).

However, its properties are surprisingly difficult to measure in their native environment: electron microscopy requires the collection of particles on a substrate, visible light scattering provides insufficient resolution, and X-ray studies have, to date, been limited to a collection of particles.

But new research, using intense coherent X-ray pulses from the Linac Coherent Light Source free-electron laser at Stanford, demonstrates a new in situ fractal method for imaging individual sub-micron particles to nanometer resolution in their native environment. The research appears in the June 28 issue of the journal, Nature.

Complex airborne particulate matter (PM) with a diameter less than 2.5 microns can efficiently transport into the human lungs and constitutes the second most important contribution to global warming. Amongst this PM, the structure and composition of carbonaceous soot has been extensively studied:

Pulsed X-ray beams were shot into a jet of aerosolized particles. Since the beam is so small and the particulate matter density is so large, only single particles were hit. The beams were so intense that diffraction from individual particles could be measured for structural analysis. Mass spectrometry on the ejected ion fragments was used to simultaneously probe the composition of single aerosol particles.

"Our results show the extent of internal symmetry of individual soot particles and the surprisingly large variations in their fractal dimensions," said Stefan Hau-Riege, one of the three Lawrence Livermore authors of the paper. "More broadly, our methods can be extended to resolve both static and dynamic structures of general ensembles of disordered particles."

Having a grasp on the general structure has wide implications ranging from solvent accessibilities in proteins, vibrational energy transfer via the hydrodynamic interaction of amino acids, and large-scale production of nanoscale structures via flame synthesis.

(AP) ? Facing weekend deadlines for action, congressional leaders have tentatively agreed to deals overhauling the nation's transportation programs without a Republican provision forcing approval of the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline, and avoiding a doubling of interest rates for new student loans, congressional officials said Wednesday.

The agreements underscored the pressures both parties face to avoid angering voters and embarrassing headlines in the run-up to this November's presidential and congressional elections. Letting road-building programs grind to a halt during an economic downturn would be a blow to the image of lawmakers, while Democrats and Republicans alike seemed eager to avoid enraging millions of students and their parents by boosting the costs of college loans.

Congressional leaders were hoping to combine the highway and student loan measures into a single bill to reduce potential procedural obstacles, and hope to vote final approval this week. Lawmakers would then leave Washington for a July 4 recess.

The two-year highway bill would prevent the government's authority to spend money on highways, bridges and transit systems from lapsing on Saturday, along with its ability to collect gasoline and diesel taxes. With both parties checkmating each other's top priorities this campaign season, Democrats and Republicans say the highway measure will be Congress' top job-creation initiative until the November elections.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., chief Senate sponsor of the transportation bill, said the measure would save or create 3 million jobs.

As the price for the highway agreement, Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., said Republicans dropped a House-approved provision requiring the government to approve the proposed Keystone pipeline, which is to move oil from western Canada to Texas' Gulf Coast.

Pipeline approval ? which prompted a veto threat from President Barack Obama ? has been a top goal this election year for the GOP, which has pitted its claims that it would create jobs against environmental worries that it could accelerate global warming and endanger Midwestern water supplies.

Republicans also agreed to abandon language blocking the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating the toxic ash generated by coal-fired power plants, Inhofe said. The ash is used as an ingredient in some types of cement.

In return, House Republicans won Senate concessions that would halve the time allowed for environmental reviews for highway projects, and squeeze money for bike paths and pedestrian safety projects by forcing them to compete with other transportation projects, Senate aides and environmentalists said.

The bill would give states more flexibility in spending federal money, impose new safety regulations and expand a federal loan guarantee program to encourage private investments in transportation projects.

Despite the measure's short-term impact, the bill delays for two years decisions about a long-term funding scheme for highway and transit programs. Gas and diesel taxes no longer cover the cost of transportation programs and are forecast to bring in less revenue as the fuel efficiency of cars and trucks increases.

President Barack Obama spent weeks this spring touring college campuses and lambasting Republicans for not pushing a freeze on student loan rates through Congress. GOP presidential challenger Mitt Romney, looking to avoid handing Obama an issue, quickly said he favored the interest rate extension and congressional GOP leaders did too, though some Republicans think the government should not spend money to keep loan rates low.

The student loan pact would keep today's 3.4 percent interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans from doubling for new loans approved beginning on Sunday, an automatic increase that Congress enacted five years ago to save money. If they did double, it would affect 7.4 million students expected to get the loans over the 12 months beginning July 1, adding $1,000 to the interest costs of the typical borrower over each loan's life.

The tentative agreement was on the same package Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., had said Tuesday that they had shaken hands on, said a congressional Republican who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the measure's status. McConnell said he expected the House to accept the agreement.

"We're moving, I think, towards an agreement on a transportation bill that would also include a one-year fix on the student loan rate increase," Boehner told reporters early Wednesday after meeting privately with House Republicans.

Some GOP lawmakers at that meeting said Boehner seemed to favor the emerging deal and said it received a positive reception.

"The general sense is there's a tremendous amount of support for getting it done," said Rep. Tom Reed, R-N.Y. "That's what's going to drive it across the finish line."

The two parties spent the last several weeks dueling over how to pay for the $6 billion cost of the student loan bill.

Under the agreement, the government would raise $5 billion by changing how companies calculate the money they have to set aside for pensions. That change would make their contributions more consistent from year to year and in effect reduce their payments initially, lowering the tax deductions they receive for their pension contributions.

Another $500 million would come from increasing the fees companies pay for the government to insure their pension plans, linking those fees to inflation.

In addition, $1.2 billion would be saved by limiting federal subsidies of Stafford loans to six years for undergraduates.

Lawmakers were discussing potentially wrapping in another Senate bill to reauthorize the national flood insurance program for five years.

The program, which provides federally backed insurance for 5.6 million households and businesses, many in flood-prone areas, has gone deeply into the red from claims after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The Senate legislation would try to return the program to fiscal soundness through such steps as allowing premium increases and reducing subsidies for vacation homes.

Outsourcing of IT

Outsourcing is an old phenomenon that has evolved to become more meaningful to businesses in recent time. Nowadays, companies outsource different business functions, from IT to customer service, HR and accounting process. Some years back, the need for cost reduction became a major concern in the business world. As a result, organizations were looking for temporal solutions through offshore software outsourcing. Amazingly, they got virtually equal benefits.

Years after, outsourcing (particularly offshore outsourcing) has become the ?in-thing? in the business world, not just for cost-saving but also a strategy for growing a business. Outsourcing of IT is a popular trend among corporations and businesses of various sizes. IT outsourcing vendor provides organizations with quality information technology services in stipulated time limits, more effectively and efficiently. In return, any company would achieve optimum flexibility with its workforce, and also gain access to best skills set that possibly wouldn?t have been affordable in-house.

Outsourcing of IT ? Fastest Way to Migrate to New Technology

The outsourcing destinations such as Philippines and India employ the latest IT techniques in serving their offshore clients. Therefore, a company is able to access the newest technology that may not yet be available in-house or even in the home country as a whole.

The renowned IT destinations such as Philippines are usually ahead of less-technologically developed countries in terms of latest IT inventions and developments. So, when a business embarks on outsourcing of IT, it enjoys the benefit of migrating to a new technology faster than its competitors in the home-country. Consequently, the overall result is distinguishable in comparison with the competitors. Work processes are conducted faster; there is increased flexibility and all-round enhancement.

This advantage can be enjoyed on a short term or long term basis depending on the decision of the company.
Leveraging specialized skill is also an advantage inherent in IT outsourcing. Whether it is offshore or in-shore outsourcing, the outsourcing vendor is usually specialized in information technology. The specialized skill provides quality and excellent result, the kind of result that cannot be measured with an in-house result. Also, access to large pool of talents is one of the benefits of outsourcing your company?s Information technology tasks.

Outsourcing of IT enables a company to maximize the important aspect of its business, in order to achieve great efficiency in running the organization. Information technology is the engine-room of any organization. Therefore, success in this area would ultimately result in success in other business aspects. It has become more affordable to outsource an organization?s IT than manning this department in-house.

Ensure that your choice of IT outsourcing vendor is based on the expertise of the vendor. First of all, look to the specialized countries when it comes to IT, then choose your vendor from such countries. The offshore outsourcing destinations for most businesses is Philippines and India, plus other countries.

Air Force Reserve wants an app for basic training

4 hrs.

Military recruits have marched off to boot camp with nothing more than their families' well-wishes in the past, but today's warriors could get a little help from their smartphones. The U.S. Air Force Reserve has drawn up a wish list for a smartphone app that can help recruits adjust to basic training and military life.

The dream app combines nutrition and exercise features that even civilian smartphone owners might envy. One app feature would count calories based on photos of food taken by the phone. Another would map a recruit's runs based on their smartphone GPS. A third feature would even provide a digital assistant similar to the Apple iPhone's Siri that can talk fitness encouragement to trainees.

But the app ideas list also has plenty of military-centric features based on learning military law, chain of command or individual responsibilities as an Air Force Reserve member. Even suggested games have themes, including "Name the Military Tune" or "Weapons Familiarization" for the U.S. military's standard-issue M-16 assault rifle ? not to mention games for learning rank, chain of command, military law, and Air Force history.

Such games would combine with possible social networking features that include basic profile information (including gender, base of assignment and ship date) and help bring people together for carpooling or to cooperate in fitness challenges. The Air Force Reserve envisions the app allowing up to 4,000 users at a time accessing the Internet through smartphone, netbook, tablet or computer.

The Air Force Reserve put out the call for interested smartphone app-makers in a "request for information" notice on June 13 with an original deadline of June 26 for any interested app-makers. But it has already extended the contact due date to July 6 because of "significant interest and questions."

Yemen oil route reopens after military pullout

SANAA | Sun Jun 24, 2012 6:17am EDT

SANAA (Reuters) - A road linking Yemen's capital to an oil-producing province was opened for the first time in more than a year on Sunday, after the army and tribal fighters agreed to withdraw from positions along the route, military officials said.

Yemen's Republican Guard had skirmished with tribal groups in the area, blocking deliveries of gas and other products from Maarib to the capital.

Both sides agreed to pull out after negotiations, said an official from Yemen's military committee - a body set up to separate belligerent factions of Yemen's army and tribal fighters following months of unrest in the impoverished country.

The tribal groups backed an uprising which started last year and eventually ousted Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh. The Republican Guard is led by Saleh's son.

Their clashes have added to the insecurity in a country which has also seen repeated bombings of the Maarib oil pipeline, which feeds Yemen's main oil refinery and remains inoperative.

Saleh gave way to his deputy, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, in February under the terms of a power transfer deal brokered by Saudi Arabia and endorsed by Washington, both alarmed by the rise of al Qaeda-linked Islamists in Yemen amid the political upheaval.

Washington, which wants Hadi to unify the military and turn it against al Qaeda, backed a military offensive against Islamist strongholds in southern Yemen that began last month.

The military says it has driven Islamist fighters from towns the militants seized in early 2011. Yemen's al Qaeda branch claimed responsibility for the killing of the top military commander in the region last week.

Canadians embracing larger role for pharmacists in health care: poll ...

OTTAWA ??? On the cusp of a milestone for medicare and in the lead-up to a much-anticipated report on health care innovation, Canadians have indicated that they have an appetite for thinking outside the box on how they can access health-care services.

The majority of Canadians would be open to seeing private-sector pharmacies such as Shoppers Drug Mart extend their products and services into new avenues of health care, according to the results of an Ipsos Reid poll released to Postmedia News, and Canada?s leading health-care professional associations and policy analysts agree that it?s a conversation worth having.

?Enabling all health-care professionals to deliver the full range of care that they?re able to makes a lot of sense for our health-care system,? said Barbara Mildon, the president of the Canadian Nurses Association.

?The long-term financial model to support our health-care system is of great concern across the country. Cost-effective ways of delivering services that keep Canadians healthy are very important, and innovation is important in how we deliver care and services.?

The poll, which surveyed a sample of 1,030 adults across Canada, asked respondents to assess their level of support for the idea of private pharmacies offering a range of health services.

The results were released as Canada nears the 50th anniversary of its national health-care insurance program and as a working group of Canada?s provincial and territorial premiers prepares to release its first report on new ways to help ensure the sustainability of health care services.

In the poll, support was strongest for having trained pharmacists administer doctor-prescribed vaccines and other drugs on site, at 88 per cent. Support remained strong across the board for other proposals, such as having pharmacies provide in-home nursing or medical care, offer outpatient clinics for physiotherapy or sports medicine, offer hospitals for specific treatments, and provide nursing homes.

More than 80 per cent of respondents said they believed that the products and services owned and offered by pharmacies would be higher than or as good as those currently available. Only 17 per cent said they believed the quality of any of the services would be lower if they were owned and offered by pharmacies.

While Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces showed the strongest support for the range of potential services, support remained high in all regions of Canada.

The poll purposely did not delve into who would pay for these services, their profitability, or the issue of whether public or private institutions should be delivering them, said John Wright, the senior vice president of Ipsos Global Public Affairs.

?We wanted it devoid of that. We simply wanted to test the saliency of it. And I think what it demonstrated is that there?s a lot of acceptance,? Wright said.

Pharmacists are among the most trusted professionals in the country, Wright said. In fact, in January ??? for the second year in a row ??? pharmacists claimed the top spot in an Ipsos Reid poll of the most trusted professions in Canada.

And the scope of the work done by pharmacists in Canada is expanding already.

Many pharmacists are giving injections in Alberta, British Columbia and New Brunswick, said Janet Cooper, the senior director of membership and public affairs at the Canadian Pharmacists Association. A lot of seniors? homes also have pharmacists as part of the health care team. And pharmacists can order and review lab tests in Alberta, Quebec and New Brunswick.

It?s a shift that?s welcomed by pharmacists, many of whom have felt constrained by a business model that has them spending much of their time on the technical aspects of dispensing prescriptions, Cooper said.

?Most of us have thought, ?I could be doing so much more. With my knowledge, my skills, I could be doing so much more?,? Cooper said. ?There?s been a desire across the pharmacy profession for a long time for this.?

The more that care can be integrated, the better, said Dr. Michael Rachlis, one of Canada?s leading health policy analysts.

But most Canadians don?t know how good their health-care services could be for what they?re already paying, Rachlis said, and have little knowledge of the integrative models already available to them such as community health centres.

It?s no wonder the poll results were so positive, Rachlis said.

?People are desperate for one-stop shopping,? he said. ?They want to go somewhere besides an emergency department and be able to get in the same day. They want to be able to get their needs met without wasting a lot of time.?

The Canadian Medical Association believes that some expansions to pharmacists? scope of practice could benefit patient care and doctors within a collaborative care framework, said Dr. John Haggie, the association?s president, in an email to Postmedia News.

?Pharmacists are essential members of the health care team. Their expertise, like that of all health professionals, should be used to its fullest extent and integrated into a comprehensive system of effective patient care,? Haggie said.

The Canadian Nurses Association agreed that collaboration was necessary to avoid duplication of services and fragmentation of care. The notion of pharmacists expanding their services lends itself well to the development of community-based teams, Mildon said.

In January, Canada?s provincial and territorial health ministers announced that they?d formed a health-care innovation working group to drive a collaborative process for transformation and innovation to help ensure the sustainable delivery of health care services.

The group, chaired by Prince Edward Island Premier Robert Ghiz and Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall, will release its first report in July.

The working group presents a real opportunity to think about health care in broader ways, including the role pharmacists can play, said Douglas Angus, a health economist and health care management expert at the University of Ottawa.

?If all Wall and Ghiz are going to be doing is sort of looking at ways to massage the way we currently do things, then my recommendation to them would be just to wrap it up and move onto some other issues,? Angus said.

?We?ve been studying, studying, studying, doing commissions and special reports after special reports. It doesn?t matter which part of the country you?re from ? we all recognize the same issues and we?ve come up with pretty much the same recommendations.

?We?re stuck in first gear. It?s time to get out of first gear and do some of these things.?

The Ipsos Reid poll was conducted from April 26-60. Weighting was employed to balance demographics.

A survey with an unweighted probability sample of the same size and a 100 per cent response rate would have an estimated margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what the results would have been if the entire population of Canada had been polled.

Tropical Storm Debby threatens Louisiana, Texas

Reuters | June 23, 2012 | 05:59 PM EDT

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Debby formed in the central Gulf of Mexico on Saturday and storm warnings were posted for part of the Louisiana coast, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Debby covered much of the eastern Gulf and was centered about 220 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The storm had top winds of 50 miles per hour (81 km per hour) and was expected to strengthen slowly, nearing hurricane force by Thursday.

Debby was moving slowly north and was expected to turn to the west on Sunday. On the hurricane center's projected path, the storm would skirt the Louisiana coast through Tuesday and hit Texas late in the week.

A tropical storm warning was issued for the Louisiana coast from the Pearl River west to Morgan City, excluding the city of New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain. Residents were warned to expect storm conditions within 36 hours.

"Tropical storm conditions are expected to first reach the coast within the warning area by Sunday night, making outside preparations difficult or dangerous," the forecasters warned.

The combination of storm surge and high tide could cause flooding in normally dry areas near the coast, they said.

Debby could bring 3 to 6 inches of rain to the Gulf Coast from southern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, with up to 10 inches of rain in isolated areas.

Pasta made from green banana flour a tasty alternative for gluten-free diets

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? People with celiac disease struggle with limited food choices, as their condition makes them unable to tolerate gluten, found in wheat and other grains. Researchers from the University of Brazil have developed a gluten-free pasta product from green banana flour, which tasters found more acceptable than regular whole wheat pasta. The product has less fat and is cheaper to produce than standard pastas.

Their research was just published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

"There was no significant difference between the modified pasta and standard samples in terms of appearance, aroma, flavor, and overall quality," reports lead investigator Renata Puppin Zandonadi, PhD, Department of Nutrition, University of Brazil. "Green bananas are considered a sub-product of low commercial value with little industrial use. For banana growers and pasta product makers, there is the possibility of diversifying and expanding their market."

Researchers compared a standard whole-wheat pasta preparation made from whole wheat flour and whole eggs with one made from green banana flour, egg whites, water, and gums. The alterations reduced the fat content and increased the protein value of the modified pasta, important because gluten removal typically reduces some proteins responsible for some sensory characteristics of pasta products. The egg whites and gum result in pasta that is less sticky than typical gluten-free pastas, and promote firmness, elasticity, moisture, and uniformity.

The modified pasta decreased fat content by over 98%. This reduction is particularly important to patients with celiac disease, because many gluten-free products compensate for the removal of gluten with high levels of lipid content.

Fifty testers who did not have celiac disease and 25 celiac disease patients compared the pastas. In both groups, the modified pasta was better accepted than the standard in aroma, flavor, texture, and overall quality, indicating that the product can possibly be commercialized to a wider market than just those with celiac disease.

The modified pasta had a high quantity of resistant starch, which may help control glycemic indexes, cholesterol, intestinal regularity, and fermentation by intestinal bacteria. "Considering that untreated celiac disease promotes cancer in intestinal cells and a highly inflammatory mucosal status, developing gluten-free products with bioactive compounds such as the ones present in green banana flour is important for celiac disease patients," concludes Dr. Zandonadi. "Patients will benefit from ingesting a product with a better nutritional profile made from an ingredient that is produced and consumed throughout the world."

In an accompanying podcast presentation, Raquel Braz Assun??o Botelho, PhD, discusses the potential benefits of green banana flour-based pasta for people with celiac disease.

Chinese Village Mistakes Adult Toy for Rare Mushroom

The inhabitants of Liucunbu, a small village in China, were stumped recently after digging up a double-headed mystery while drilling a new well shaft. Apparently, everyone in the village does it in the dark because none of them were able to distinguish the difference between what they believed to be a rare mushroom and a fake rubber female love canal.

We would not advise putting this thing on a pizza. In fact, do not let this thing anywhere near your lips. This is not some long lost legendary mushroom found growing deep inside the center of the earth somewhere below the Changtang Prairie ? it?s actually a used sex toy!

We certainly hope these villagers have learned something from this experience ? because we have. Not only is it good to know that we can use our pocket vaginas as emergency floatation devices, but Asian fungus reporters really turn us on!

3 Proven Steps To Get More Repeat Customers Online | Internet and ...

One of the greatest methods to boost your business is repeat and referral consumers and the same goes for online businesses too. The more repeat site visitors and referrals you get the better. Why? Because they've a far higher signup rate than does someone stumbling on your site and who are not actually sure what they are looking for. It is way easier to get repeat shoppers with a store front right? I mean you get to place yourself in front of them and show them your great customer service, product and expertise in the field. Well I am here to tell you that regardless of whether you run an ecommerce website and never see the customers there are steps you can take to guarantee the maximum amount of repeat customers.

1) Keep your page content updated. No-one wants to see outmoded content on the website. One way an Arizona web design company does this is by using a blog. A blog is a great way to make you add to the content of your website and it will also keep the visitors interested so they will comeback.

2) Get your visitors to opt in to you newsletter by offering the special offers. Everyone loves to get free things and save money. This need to save cash enables you to get shoppers returning on a frequent basis. Using HireAWiz, a Phoenix web design company, as an example to get returning purchasers they may send out a newsletter giving buyers 15 % off a domain order.

3) Using social media internet sites is the simplest way to obtain repeat purchasers. When a customer is keen on you on Facebook she or he is going to be in a position to view all of your posts. A person is way more certain to check their social media accounts (plenty of whom check it on an everyday basis) than they are your internet site so this makes social media a good way to raise your repeat purchaser traffic.

These 3 tips will help you begin getting those repeat customers which will keep your business going. If you need help with anything for your web project don?t hesitate to contact HireAWiz a top-flight Phoenix web design company. Contact them today and see what they can do to help expand your business.

A Slice of Mind: A bit of "creative" writing I did a while back on my blog.

?Witnessing On An Airplane?
A Free testimony manual for creative evangelizing techniques

By Renee (Satire)
December 21, 2010

Handing out tracts or witnessing to lost souls can be a daunting challenge for any true disciple of Christ. Getting people to give you two or three hours of their day to preach at them and announce their imminent fall into a fiery, eternal abyss (unless they accept word for word everything you say) may not bring them glorious sensations of joy.

And that is why we have devised an entire course entitled ?Evangelizing On An Airplane? suitable for any Christian novice.? In ordinary circumstances you?re convertee will not tolerate your threats of impending hellfire and will simply walk away or impudently tear up the tract you?ve handed them.? On a airplane however, options to escape or avoid an altercation are considerably limited.

Choosing a long flight from Seattle, Washington to, say, Madagascar, will give you enough time to belabor your fundamentalist ideology into your targets brain.?? While your airplane neighbor may be mentally reveling in a lusciously tropical vacation in Madagascar, an offshore ferry ride to Mauritius, petting wild lemurs in rainforests or lackadaisically sprawling on beaches, it only seems fair to make him ?work for it first? so to speak. You can do this by strong-arming? your fellow passenger to listen to long, drawn out scriptural oratory, recited by yours truly, of course.? Only then can your airplane aficionado enjoy their vacation more fully once they arrive.

Why does this method work so effectively? To begin, the individual you are attempting to convert has very few places he can go.? He may not like it, but for safety reasons which we won?t elaborate on here, he is forced to remain in the plane throughout the duration of the flight.? Since the cabin of the plane is limited in space, there are only so many places he can hide.? Remaining locked in a lavatory throughout the flight will not be tolerated by flight attendant staff or by other passengers.? Your fellow flight neighbor will be forced to remain in his seat for the majority of the flight.

You may want to start your session by covertly placing a large, black, KJV Bible on the tray table in front of you with several sheets of clean paper, pencils, and a thick stack of printouts entitled ?How to convert someone on an airplane?.?? You obviously don?t want to scare your fellow passengers so doing this in the most discreet manner possible is preferred.? The hellfire video depicting graphic scenes of sinners burning alive should be saved towards the latter half of the flight, or, you may find it convenient to switch on when the plane is passing through heavy turbulence.

To begin, you will want to greet your fellow flying mate with a friendly handshake and a warm, foreboding smile.? Offering little hints such as these are sure to put your fellow plane passenger at ease and give you an aura of credibility and sincerity.? He or she will automatically think ?This person can be trusted? etc. If your neighbor appears a bit resistant or seems to smile through clinched teeth, he may need a bit of warming up before any intense bursts of preaching should commence.? You may want to break the ice by asking a few, small, but harmless questions or telling them a little about yourself ?My name is John and I attend (insert your church denomination here). Getting info on their blood type or whether they are an organ donor isn?t necessary at this stage.? Save your ?What do you think would be the worst way to die?? questions for at least 5 or 10 minutes into the conversation.

Before exchanging a plethora of stupid niceties, it may be wise to ask your friend which church they belong to.? This one question alone can guide the course of your conversation for the rest of the flight.? If your neighbor says ?I don?t go to church.? You can rest assured and begin your mantra into the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ--(or else).

?If, at any time you find your neighbor pivoting from your original? topic of discussion to other trivial, insignificant banalities such as his family, children or the prevailing illness he is dying from, you will need to reread our tactical guide on ?Getting back on topic?.?? You don?t want to find yourself in a discussion learning about his views on things or who he is as a person.? Remember, the whole point of this discussion is you discussing your views and creating a slightly awkward, mildly pressured environment for him to listen to you and what you have to say about the gospel of Jesus Christ.

If your neighbor explains that he is already part of a church that happens to not be denomination of your choosing, you can sometimes gently let it slide, agreeing to disagree.? However there is some virtue in finding a couple topics that the two of you vehemently disagree on such as areas of scripture that your neighbor has interpreted incorrectly or intentionally to fit his sinful lusts.? At that point you can start a healthy, much needed dialogue to even out creases in your neighbors basic hell-bound misunderstandings.

A good thing to ask your flying mate is ?Do you think you are a good person?? He may initially flinch, wondering why such a question is being asked.? He may be under the delusion that he is generally a good person. There is extreme utility in this important question. It is a very sneaky way to get your friend to admit that he isn?t perfect, and then, in his weakest moment of desperation, loudly and fanatically call him on it, preferably in front of nearby flight passengers.? You can ask him if he has ever lied or looked upon a woman with lust.? You can ask him if he has ever said a curse word.

The goal is to find where your friend is a failure and then point at him and laugh uncontrollably. Using childlike mannerisms and tone, you may want to explain that his character defects are blatantly offensive to both yourself and to God.? Making people feel bad about their sinful lifestyle is a good way to segue into ?their need? and then offer a solution to the need you?ve created--that only you (or the people you know) can offer.? This is, perhaps, as simple as marketing 101.? When people realize that you?re trying to market an idea to them and not simply trying to be a friend, they tend to respect you even more.? You are obviously coming from a sincere starting place, free of bias or passion with the goal of trying to bring about truth.? No coercion is ever necessary.

After you have done this, bringing out the video ?Hell-fire testimonials?--from people who have been to hell and back--we?ll often seal the deal.
Notice the rise in anxiety, blood flow and perspiration that accompanies your friends face as the fidgeting begins. ?Finessing your sales pitch with a little Fear? as we like to call it, is an excellent way to bring them towards your ideology.

As your flight approaches its end, you will want to finish your session with prayer, communion and baptism.? Ask your local flight attendant for several pitchers of water and some croutons.? When the flight attendant gives you a disapproving look, loudly remind them that religious intolerance will not be tolerated on a cross-continental flight.? You are an American citizen with certain unalienable religious rights and the ceremony you are about to perform will go on, despite flight staff disapproval.

Hosting communion followed by baptism on an airplane is always a very creative experience for everyone present. First of all, it shows your sincerity about your religious stance and makes it publicly known to others that you are willing to take whatever risk is necessary for your faith--donning a very reassuring feeling to the other flight passengers.? As we all can attest, few people can resist the well-meaning intentions of a religious zealot aboard an airplane.

Dumping two or three pitchers of chilled water over your flying mates head will suffice for a baptismal experience.? Later, after he has dried to completion, and shook his wet hair off like a wet dog, begin communion. Offer him a crouton and announce ?I break this bread as a covenant unto you? continue with the communion oratory.? Finally, you can end your session with a long, dull prayer. Ask everyone on the airplane--including pilots and flight attendant staff--to bow their heads, close their eyes and join you in prayer.
