Job Interview Tip: Don't Sabotage Your ... - Job Search Techniques

As an interview coach, I constantly recommend that my clients bring a 30/60/90-day plan to their job interviews.? This plan is a written outline for what they intend to do and attain within the very first 3 months on the job.? It takes analysis and strategic thinking to put 1 together, and it?s a lot of work, but it produces amazing results. ? It ?shows? the hiring manager what life will look like with you on the job and helps him to see you in it, which gives you a large advantage over other candidates.

However, some job seekers are uncomfortable with it because (1) maybe they will get some component of it wrong; (2) maybe the hiring manager won?t want to see the plan; or (3) maybe I won?t get an opportunity to show the plan?then all that work will be for nothing.

To answer this, I want to present two scenarios to you:

Candidate A has an interview with a hiring manager who made a mistake the last time he hired an individual, and is genuinely nervous about making the appropriate choice this time.? The manager is looking for an individual who really knows his stuff, can do a excellent job, and will pose no risk to his own continued employment.? That?s no difficulty for Candidate A, simply because he?s a strong candidate with a fantastic background, and interviews well.

Candidate B has the exact same job experience as Candidate A, and also answers the questions well?in fact, he answers them just like Candidate A (so there?s no distinction in the high quality of the candidates).? The only distinction is, when Candidate B is asked how he will strategically approach the job, he says, ?I?m so glad you asked about that.? I want to show you the plan I?ve put together for what I will do the initial 3 months of my employment with you.? I?ve by no means worked here just before, so I?m certain there will be some things that require to be corrected [which takes care of objection #1], so please tell me what those are so that I can.? I want to realize the position greater, and I want you to understand how I believe about this role so that you?ll be comfortable with hiring me.? I want you to know that I can do this job, and I will do this job. ?Candidate B reviews the plan, and talks with the hiring manager in detail about how he?ll execute the job, asking questions and revising when necessary.? Once he?s completed, he asks, ?Do you think that if I were to execute this plan with the changes we?ve made, that I will be off to a successful commence with this business??? The answer will always be ?Yes.?

Candidate B will have demonstrated much better than Candidate A that he?s a better, safer bet for hiring.

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) ? LSU's Jarrett Lee stepped back in the pocket, surveyed the field and let a pass fly. It was a beautifully thrown fade route to Rueben Randle, who beat two Mississippi State defenders to the corner of the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown.

Everyone already knew LSU had a great running game and defense. Now the Tigers might be developing a quarterback to match.

"Rueben made a great route ? it was just a matter of putting it out there for him," Lee said. "I feel like I'm becoming a more mature player. Really developing."

The senior quarterback, filling in for suspended Jordan Jefferson, completed 21 of 27 passes for 213 yards and the touchdown and No. 3 LSU defeated No. 25 Mississippi State 19-6 on Thursday night.

Lee's night was filled with conservative, but nearly perfect passes all over the field. Then in a crucial moment, his strike to Randle hushed a raucous Mississippi State crowd and gave the Tigers a 16-6 lead.

His only real mistake was an interception minutes later, but as it had all game, LSU's defense stuffed Mississippi State with little trouble. LSU (3-0, 1-0 Southeastern Conference) had 15 tackles for a loss and held the Bulldogs (1-2, 0-2) to 193 total yards and two field goals.

"It was really fun to see," LSU coach Les Miles said.

Despite Mississippi State's cowbells providing an ever-present backdrop, LSU won its 12th straight game in the series dating to 1999.

Lee's success is quickly making LSU fans forget about Jefferson, the expected starter who has been suspended all season after being arrested for his alleged role in a bar fight in August. Lee wasn't necessarily spectacular, but he didn't have to be, calmly managing the game and hitting open receivers when opportunities arose.

It's a stark contrast from his freshman season in 2008, when Lee threw 16 interceptions, including seven that were returned for touchdowns. Since those tough days he's spent most of the time on the bench. Now with a new opportunity, he's taking full advantage.

It helps that LSU's running game continues to be spectacular. Spencer Ware rushed for 107 yards on 22 carries.

LSU was its own worst enemy much of the game before its late-game breakout. In a particularly brutal stretch in the third quarter, the Tigers committed five penalties in less than nine minutes, losing 67 yards in the process. Lee's interception gave Mississippi State newfound life after falling behind 16-6.

But LSU's defense was good enough to make up for all those transgressions, constantly putting pressure on Mississippi State quarterback Chris Relf and disrupting the Bulldogs' vaunted running game, which had gained at least 300 yards rushing in each of the season's first two games.

MSU's Vick Ballard managed just 38 yards on 10 carries, while Relf rushed for 10 yards on 16 carries. Relf was benched for Tyler Russell late in the game, but the sophomore didn't have any success either.

"We didn't get into a rhythm," Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said. "... We got behind and had to throw the ball and play their game. Our playmakers have to make plays. We will be all right ? our guys always bounce back."

The loss continued Mississippi State's frustration against SEC Western Division rivals. The Bulldogs are 2-10 against the West, with both of those wins coming against rival Ole Miss. It's been a tough six days for Mississippi State, which lost to Auburn 41-34 on Saturday.

As expected, the game was bruising from the outset. Relf was thrown to the turf on a sack by LSU's Kendrick Adams on the second play of the game, and the tone never changed for either team.

Though both teams are known for their run-first approach, the quarterbacks had a surprising amount of success, especially in the first half. Lee completed 13 of 15 passes for 128 yards in the first half and Relf countered with 9 of 11 completions for 78 yards.

But that success bogged down once either offense entered the red zone, with both teams having to settle for field goals that did little to alter momentum.

LSU scored first after a 16-play, 77-yard drive ended in Drew Alleman's 21-yard field goal. Mississippi State answered with their own bruising 14-play, 57-yard drive, capped by Derek DePasquale's 26-yard field goal.

LSU took a 6-3 lead into halftime after Alleman drilled a 42-yard field goal with 1:18 left in the second quarter.

The field goal parade continued in the second half, with DePasquale's 42-yarder tying the game at 6 in the third quarter. Alleman answered with a 41-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 9-6 lead with 1:46 remaining.

Finally, LSU was able to break through with Lee's touchdown throw to Randle, which quieted the cowbells.

"We went into half saying 'We took some 3s, but they need to be 7s,'" Miles said. "But the way our defense was playing, that almost wasn't necessary."

By the end of the game, the small contingent of LSU fans in the corner of the stadium was chanting "This is our State," a not-so-subtle jab at Mississippi State's marketing campaign that is constantly shown on Davis Wade Stadium's massive jumbotron.

Bus-train crash kills 7, injures 162 in Argentina (AP)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? A train slammed into a bus trying to beat it across the railroad tracks during rush hour Tuesday, ramming the vehicle into a platform and then striking another locomotive head-on. At least seven people were killed and more than 160 injured, authorities said.

The bus driver was among those killed, Argentine Transportation Secretary J.P. Schiavi said.

The force of the arriving train reduced the bus to a fraction of its width as it became wedged against the station platform. The front of the train then slammed into another train that was preparing to leave the Flores station in the opposite direction on the Sarmiento line, which connects the suburb of Moreno to the Once station downtown.

Schiavi said children also were among those injured in the accident, which happened at 6:15 a.m., just when many parents use public transportation to take their children to school.

Schiavi said the barriers appeared to be functioning normally, but reporters at the scene challenged that, saying some witnesses had reported that one of the barriers had descended only part-way down, leaving room for the bus to try to drive across the tracks despite the warning bells. Schiavi said investigators were studying videotape of the accident to determine exactly what happened.

Helicopters helped carry the injured to at least seven hospitals around the Argentine capital.

Buenos Aires' passenger rail system moves at street level through most neighborhoods of the capital and surrounding provinces, trying the patience of drivers who often can be seen ignoring the lights, bells and barriers that signal an approaching train. The potential for collisions increases at rush-hour, particularly next to stations, with trains passing and barriers dropping every few minutes.

NPSP helps military parents with parenting challenges and demands

ALEXANDRIA, Va. ? The New Parent Support Program addresses the many concerns and challenges that military Families with children, ages 0 to 3, face during early childhood with an emphasis on Family strengths.

?The program is offered to Military Families to enhance parent and infant attachment, increase knowledge of child development, and provide connections to the support services that allow parents to become nurturing and capable caregivers,? NPSP Program Manager Rich Lopez said.

By integrating prevention education services and activities, NPSP involves both parents, if possible, and supports the Family?s adaptation to military life by enhancing knowledge and skills needed to promote healthy Family interaction, form healthy relationships, provide safe and nurturing environments for children, and enhance formal and informal support networks.

?While NPSP?s primary focus is child advocacy and maltreatment prevention through parenting education and support, NPSP helps all Families with young children by providing the skills necessary to promote healthy parenting,? Lopez said.

The NPSP services are provided by experienced, licensed clinical social workers and registered nurses who have extensive experience working with Families with young children and who are sensitive to the unique challenges facing military Families.

According to Dr. Lori Worley, NPSP & Military Child/Family Issues Program Manager., one mom?s life was saved through the interaction with her home visitor who noticed something was wrong with the pregnancy of one of the mothers in a class she was teaching.

?About two months ago, I was participating in a group of classes called ?Mommy and Daddy Boot Camp? with my husband, Sgt. Sean Sweeney at Fort Lee, Va. One morning before the next class was to begin, I woke up more swollen than normal. Elaine Sexton, RN, and our home visitor, took me aside after the class and told me to call my doctor to schedule an emergency appointment since I was showing signs of preeclampsia,? Cpl. Gretchen M. Sweeney said.

Preeclampsia is a condition of pregnancy marked by high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Left untreated, it can lead to serious, even fatal, complications for both mom and baby. One of the signs, although not conclusive, is swelling in the face and hands.

?My doctor diagnosed me with preeclampsia and told me if I hadn?t gotten to him my baby and I would have both been in danger. Since then, Miss Sexton has been very attentive, often calling to check up on me and has even visited on numerous occasions to make sure everything is okay,? Sweeney said.

Spc. James Clark and his wife Kristie at Fort Campbell, Ky. joined the program because they had concerns about their son?s medical issues.

?Our son Hunter has umbilicus hernia and colic and had been crying all the time, plus I had symptoms of post-partum depression,? Kristie said.

?Our home visitor, Mary Vozar from NPSP, was great. She was able to answer all our questions, and what she couldn?t answer, she was able to point us in the right direction to get those answers,? she said.

Sgt. David Brown and his wife, Karinna, stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C, have known their home visitor Diana McNamara for 33 months.

?We heard about the New Parent Support Program while attending the infant care and parenting Classes. At the time I was feeling overwhelmed and a little depressed. Diana is always bringing a lot of good information to me at my home,? Karinna said.

Diana, Karinna said, always knows what?s needed when she visits and is very ?on-target? with helping.

?It?s made things easier by having her come to visit and helping me through some difficult times like when my brother died last year, and when my husband deployed,? Karinna said.

?She?s also helped us understand my older son?s developmental delays, and navigating through educational and developmental intervention services. Diana goes above and beyond to help my Family and I can?t express in words what she means to me,? Karinna said.

While all active Soldiers, National Guard and Reserve, and their Families within a 50-mile radius of an installation are eligible to receive these services, priority is given to first-time parents, single parents and dual military Families.

Families can enter the program by referral from a health professional, the command or by a civilian agency, or by simply requesting NPSP services through ACS.

Program activities include screening, play groups, support groups, deployment briefs, reunion and reintegration briefs and command briefs.

Classes offered by NPSP may include prenatal and infant care, home safety, children and the deployment cycle, stress management, and infant safety, to name a few.

Crystals of urea formed on cooling from melted material under a coverglass. In humans urea (or uric acid) is a breakdown product of protein metabolism and is excreted in urine. Excess accumulation of uric acid can lead to a painful condition known as gout, which is the result of uric acid crystals forming in joints and capillaries.

The colours were achieved by photographing the sample between crossed polars and inverting to produce the pastel tints.

CSN: Big offseason additions boost Pats

FOXBORO, MA -? Albert Haynesworth could make a huge difference for the Patriots in 2011. But the guy who called him out last year in Washington, Andre Carter, could make a similar impact.
?
Chad Ochocinco might give Tom Brady the outside option he seemed to miss in the Patriots? playoff loss to the Jets in 2010. But the guy who chased Brady all over the playground that evening ? Shaun Ellis ? has been taken away from the Jets and brought to New England. And that may matter even more.
?
When it comes to the Patriots' 2011 fortunes, Albert and Ocho have been easy conversation starters, but the talk shouldn?t end there.
?
New England worked at adding veteran players to areas of apparent need this offseason and a team that went 14-2 but suffered a soul-sucking playoff loss to the Jets should ? SHOULD ? be even better.
?
The way the Patriots were ushered from the postseason last season ? beaten and beaten up at Gillette Stadium by a Jets team that it had defeated 45-3 just a few weeks earlier ? cast a pall over what was a remarkable 2010.
?
Think about it. The Patriots beat the Ravens, Chargers, Steelers, Colts, Packers, Bears and Jets last season.
?
They scored 518 points ? 205 more than they allowed.
?
Tom Brady threw 36 touchdown passes and 4 interceptions ? Ruthian numbers in a season where Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger and Drew Brees combined for 83 picks.
?
They picked off 25 passes and were a ridiculous plus-28 in turnover ratio.
?
But Brady?s incredible efficiency and the opportunism of the defense masked some issues.
?
The youth of the offensive skill position players ? two rookie tight ends and running backs in their first seasons as feature players ? made the Patriots' offensive performance that much more remarkable. Never mind the fact the team jettisoned Randy Moss and enmeshed Deion Branch into the offense on the fly. This was a Brady-Belichick-Bill O?Brien production and a remarkable one at that.
?
The Patriots? third down defense was abhorrent. They allowed conversions 47 percent of the time on third down. The pass rush was unremarkable. New England had 36 sacks but the guy who led the team ? defensive lineman Mike Wright ? had only 5.5 and missed half the season. The best pass rushers were Wright, 375-pound Vince Wilfork, late-season acquisition Eric Moore and outside linebacker Rob Ninkovich.
?
Game situation was a leading factor in the Patriots putting up those numbers and the situation frequently was that they were up big. And with that, we come back to Brady.
?
And when Brady was unable to put the team on his back, they lost. Week 2 to the Jets. Week 9 to the Browns. The playoffs to the Jets again. It all hearkened back to the playoff losses in 2009 and 2007, where Brady was under siege and nobody else could make a game-changing play.
?
Belichick is smart enough to realize that having the best quarterback of this generation is nice but if the Patriots don?t get him some help elsewhere on the roster, his Super Bowl count will never get past three.
?
And that?s what the Patriots spent the offseason doing.
?
First, the defensive side. The tepid pass rush and reactive 3-4 defense designed to ?build a wall? and force offenses to proceed down the offense piece-by-piece has been scrapped. In its place, the 4-3. And one of the best practitioners of the 4-3 defense is Haynesworth. All he wants to do is get after the passer in a straight line upfield. Asked to do differently with Washington, he balked. And that?s what the Patriots concern has to be now. Will Haynesworth play for them? He indicates he will, but he?s talked it and failed to walk it in the past.
?
Andre Carter hasn?t had those issues. He?s been a steady, respected player since coming into the league in 2001.
?
And that?s part of the reason he wasn?t having any of Haynesworth?s BS when the two were teammates in Washington and Haynesworth was refusing to the play the 3-4.
?
?I haven?t experienced a player prioritizing his position on the field over working with the game,? Carter said last July. ?It?s disappointing because Albert could fit in this scheme. All we can say is we wish him the best and we will see what happens in a month. He made his statement that he didn?t want to play in this scheme and we are not going to force him to play. He?s a grown man. We have moved forward.?
?
And now the two have moved back in together on the same defense. Carter?s been outstanding in preseason, the kind of edge rusher the Patriots haven?t employed in some time.
?
With Haynesworth and Wilfork crushing the middle and Carter coming off the edge, there aren?t many options for opposing quarterbacks. Especially with Ellis coming off the other edge.
?
He earned the nickname ?Patriot Killer? while in New York for 11 seasons. He is one of the versatile players who can play inside or outside, 3-4 or 4-3, pass rush or stop the run.

He was important to the Patriots because of what he could bring. Also, no doubt, because his loss to the Jets would be significant. But New York could only offer him $910,000 due to salary cap concerns. The Patriots signed him to a deal that will pay him more than $4 million.

That?s a win-win.

Which brings us to Ocho. So far, he?s had a rocky adjustment to the Patriots offense. Every offense is precise. Every offense requires its receivers to make post-snap reads. The Patriots are a little bit on the next level with those two items. As a result, Ocho?s been lamenting the fact he hasn?t yet been able to play without thinking.

He said he?s close ? a ?seven? out of 10 when asked recently ? and he certainly still has the skills to be a factor. When you see the speed with which he comes out of breaks and the quiet speed he runs his routes with, there?s no question he?ll get separation. But he needs to be in the right spots exactly.

Brady doesn?t care how many Twitter followers his receivers have. Only that they are in the appointed spot at the appointed time.

No one addition is going to put the Patriots over the top. They are a talented team but the reason they succeed is precision, preparedness, intelligence, Brady and Belichick.

All this talk about change, that?s what remains constant.
