Intro:
Life atop the surfaces of planets has ended. The year was 3101 when Earth, founding planet of the Coalition of United Systems, and her people held nearly three dozen worlds under their sway. Without warning, and for reasons entirely lost to all who survived, all sentient life and traces of industrialization vanished. Space stations, and any structures within atmosphere, whether on the surface or not, went with them. Planets were returned to their natural states, and only the far-flung asteroid bases and colonies and fleets of starships remained. These shadows gathered at the major military outpost of Helix where, for a brief time, humanity was once again solidified beneath a single banner: the Union of the Remnant. Eventually this entity dissolved, and from the ashes was born the venerable Fleet of Night. The year is now 22,756 PS (Post-Sweep). Humans, the dominant force in the Fleet, have made contact with innumerable races of aliens, the majority of whom have suffered similar fates as their own. Bolstered by time and number, the Fleet roams the vastness of space, one power among many, as a mobile migratory nation. Can you survive in this era of uncertainty, one amidst billions, or will the weight of Night swallow you?

Mar. 29, 2013 ? A chromosome is rarely found in the shape we are used to seeing in biology books, that is to say the typical double rod shape (the X pattern, to put it simply). It is usually "diluted" in the nucleus and creates a bundle that under the microscope appears as a messy tangle. In the last few years such chaos, however, has been "measured" and scientists have unveiled their secret: the genes in the tangle are actually arranged in regions that may perform a functional role.
A research coordinated by the scientists at SISSA of Trieste has now developed and studied a numeric model of the chromosome that supports the experimental data and provides a hypothesis on the bundle's function.
A chromosome spends most of its life "diluted" in the nuclear cytoplasm. To the untrained eye it may look like a randomly entangled thread, yet biologists claim the opposite: although a chaotic component does exist in the bundle, experimental measurements have identified regions that tend to contain specific genes. Thanks to such measurements, researchers have obtained maps of the chromosome in its diluted form, the one in which the DNA transcription processes occur.
Cristian Micheletti, a physicist of SISSA, the International School for Advanced Studies of Trieste, has coordinated an international research team -- in which Marco Di Stefano and Angelo Rosa stand out -- that has devised an ingenious method which, on one hand, has allowed to verify the already known experimental measures and, on the other, to find data in support of a theory which explains why the DNA bundle is arranged in regions. "Employing the vast amount of publicly available data on gene expression, we have identified families of genes co-regulated within a chromosome" explains Micheletti. The co-regulated genes codify "in accord," but how such synchronization occurs is a mystery, since often the genes are located very far from one another on the DNA filament. "Two main hypotheses may be considered: either 'messengers' exist that travel back and forth from one gene to the other and coordinate the activity, or the DNA filament folding up inside the tangle brings the genes belonging to the same family physically close."
On the basis of the second assumption Micheletti and his colleagues have used the computer to induce the DNA numeric model to bring the co-regulated genes closer. "The outcome of the simulation has provided a map of chromosome arrangement that is very close to the one obtained through experimentation," explains Micheletti. "Besides, the model has successfully brought closer the genes belonging to the same family, as we had asked for, in 80% of cases, that is without too much effort, which corroborates the validity of the hypothesis and the effectiveness of the simulation."

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) ? Protests by the unemployed in southern Algeria are raising the specter of rising unrest in the country's sensitive oil regions, and are increasingly attracting the attention of al-Qaida.
Algeria's vast, sparsely populated Sahara only holds 10 percent of the country's population but it is home to this North African country's enormous oil and gas reserves ? the basis of the entire economy and the source of the government's power. Those who live there claim they aren't benefiting from that wealth, and can't get jobs with the oil companies.
Now al-Qaida has praised the protesters, raising the possibility that it is seeking support among the disaffected groups. The government is rushing to address the protesters' demands, but hasn't yet convinced them that it's serious.
Some 10,000 people ? an enormous number for the lightly populated region ?demonstrated on March 14 in Algeria's southern oil city of Ouargla, and thousands more later protested in another southern oil town, Laghouat.
"We want access to jobs in the oil companies, and not just the low-value ones like drivers and security guards; we want to be in the administration," Tahar Belabes, the head of the National Committee for Defense of the Rights of the Unemployed, which organized the demonstration, said by telephone from Ouargla.
"We just want the same employment possibilities. It's not normal that we live in the region where the oil and gas is located but don't benefit from it."
While youth unemployment is widespread in Algeria, and the rest of North Africa, the southerners say they are particularly discriminated against. There is also a widespread distrust of government officials, who are believed corrupt and skimming off the country's vast oil receipts.
Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal acknowledged on March 16 that the demonstrators' demands are legitimate and the government hurriedly announced a string of measures to address the perceived geographical bias in oil jobs. Oil companies will be obliged to give priority to job candidates from the south and recruitment must occur through registered employment agencies. The government announced that job-training centers would be set up to ready candidates for jobs with oil companies and hotels.
The demonstrations, however, have not stopped, and on Monday hundreds protested in the desert towns of Ghardaia, which the next day degenerated into widespread clashes with police that destroyed several government buildings and resulted in the arrest of seven young men for "vandalism and destruction of public property," the state news agency reported Saturday.
"The demonstrations are continuing because the young unemployed don't believe in official promises and they don't trust the local government representatives or their parliamentarians ? they want to negotiate directly with the government," said Kamal Zaidi, a member of an unemployed group in Laghouat and a human rights activist.
Most worrying for the government is that, on Friday, Al-Qaida's North African branch expressed solidarity with the demonstrations, slamming what they say is the corrupt use of the country's resources.
"The events of the south and the call of the people to protest in the streets is the natural response to the policy of marginalization and nepotism used by the corrupt Algerian regime," said the message posted on extremist websites.
Al-Qaida's signature tactic around the world has been to find marginalized groups in remote areas and espouse their cause, much the way they did with the disenfranchised Tuareg tribesmen in northern Mali, setting up a foothold that later became a de facto state before they were routed by the French in February.
In January, an al-Qaida-linked group for the first time attacked one of the country's remote desert gas plants.
While the leaders of Al-Qaida's Algerian branch are predominantly from the populous north, the leader of the attack on the Ain Amenas gas complex in January that left 37 hostages dead was a southerner ? Lamine Bencheneb, part of the radical Sons of Sahara armed Islamic group.
In the attack, the multinational team of militants appeared to know the complex inside and out, sparking reports that they may have had allies among the site's local drivers who had gone on strike over low pay just weeks earlier.
Geoff Porter, a veteran Algeria analyst with the North Africa Risk Consulting firm said the "unevenness" of past government investment programs have left a legacy of distrust in the south ? a region that also lacks the educational opportunities to produce the necessary skills for oil sector jobs.
Part of the problem, he added, is that the hydrocarbon industries don't require very much employment and there is little else going in these remote communities after the desert tourism industry dried up.
In attempt to curb the recent demonstrations, the government sent local parliamentarians, mostly from the ruling party, back to their towns in the south to hold meetings, but most of these were boycotted by the committees of the unemployed.
"The Algerian state has always had a policy of national investment and a great deal of money has been invested in the south, just like the other regions," said Mohammed Dhimi, one of the members of parliament from the south. "Perhaps the investments were not well thought-out or misdirected or didn't respond to the agricultural and industrial needs of the people."
"The protesters may sense that they have built up some momentum and that they are going to continue their protests until they see meaningful steps taken to deliver on the prime minister's promises," he said.
Belabes, the head of the unemployment committee, promised a new round of demonstrations in the coming days.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, about 30 chiefs of Algeria's Tuareg tribes, ethnically the same group that revolted against the government across the border in Mali, presented authorities with their own manifesto of demands, including more jobs, governorships, and high diplomatic positions for the nation's Tuaregs, reported the daily El Watan.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Police on Saturday released the name of a man suspected in the abduction of a 10-year-old girl who was snatched from her San Fernando Valley home before dawn last week and abandoned hours later in front of a hospital.
Tobias Dustin Summers, a 30-year-old man who was recently released from prison, was identified as a "child-kidnapping suspect," Los Angeles police said. Summers has a lengthy criminal record, having been arrested in the past for robbery, grand theft auto and kidnapping, according to authorities.
Dozens of detectives worked around the clock looking for clues since the girl was abducted from her home on Wednesday. She was found hours later, wandering near a Starbucks several miles from her home.
The girl was barefoot, scratched and not wearing the same clothes she had on when she vanished. She told the police two men she didn't recognize had taken her from her home.
Investigators have said they believe the girl was driven around the San Fernando Valley in a couple of cars and taken to at least two locations, including a storage facility, before she was released.
A passer-by who recognized her picture from media reports saw her outside the Starbucks and called police. The girl had wandered there from the hospital where she had been dropped.

LONDON (AP) ? A flamboyant but unqualified lawyer whose clients included deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in jail for fraud.
Giovanni Di Stefano was nicknamed "The Devil's Advocate" for speaking on behalf of figures including Saddam, former Iraqi Vice President Tariq Aziz and British train robber Ronnie Biggs.
Prosecutors say he conned clients out of millions of pounds by operating as a lawyer when he had no legal qualifications and was not registered to practice in Britain or Italy, where he had offices.
"Some predators hunt down their victims, others lie in wait for them," the judge, Alistair McCreath, told Di Stefano. "Your victims in this case were all desperate people and people who, because of their desperation, were vulnerable."
Di Stefano, who was born in Italy and raised in Britain, was one of several non-Arab lawyers who acted as consultants to the team that defended the deposed Iraqi dictator and associates in his regime.
He also represented many ordinary people, whom the judge said had been left emotionally scarred by "the building of false hopes, always and inevitably dashed, followed by years of misery and frustration as they tried to recover what you had stolen."
Di Stefano was convicted at London's Southwark Crown Court this week of 25 charges, including deception, fraud and money laundering.
He pleaded guilty Thursday to two other fraud charges, including stealing 150,000 pounds ($225,000) in compensation intended for a man who had lost an arm in a car crash. Prosecutors said Di Stefano had the money paid into his own business account instead.
Passing sentence, the judge said Di Stefano had caused distress to many people, adding: "Your only concern was to line your own pockets."

Jack Ruderman, 9, smiles as he learns how to surf. One of the camp lifeguards, Radael Ruiz, 36, helps him get the board in the correct position for the wave. Cayla Nimmo // Photo Editor
On the shores of Miami Beach, 27 staff members and 12 campers take to the waves this week to put their surfing skills to the test during the University of Miami-Nova Southeastern University?s Center for Autism and Related Diseases? (UM-NSU CARD) Surf Camp.
The annual program located at South Pointe Park hosts 12 children between the ages of 8 and 12 who have autism. These high- and low-functioning children spend the week of their spring break learning how to surf.
Of the 7,000 families at CARD, these 12 children are selected after going through an interview process to evaluate their ability to thrive on their own without familiar faces.
?This is a camp to focus on their abilities, instead of their disabilities,? said Maricarmen Saleta, an educational specialist at UM-NSU CARD who helped plan the program in 2007.
After meeting Michael Alessandri, executive director of CARD, Saleta moved to Miami in 2005 and began working for him at UM-NSU CARD. In 2007, Julio Magrisso, assistant director of the recreation division for the city of Miami Beach, saw a documentary about a similar camp in California for children with disabilities. Immediately inspired, he contacted Alessandri, who passed the project on to Saleta, and the two groups began co-planning the camp.
The weeklong program, funded by the Autism Society of Miami and private sponsors acquired at CARD?s annual ?Tropical Nights? fundraiser, is free to campers and their families.
The program first took place in 2008 and hosted two sessions. However, each year since, they have only been able to offer one session due to funding.
The city already had a summer Surf Camp organized for ordinary kids, so it was easy to adapt the same staff and instructors for CARD?s program, said Edith Guerra, a Miami-Beach Parks and Recreation Supervisor who has worked for the camp since its inception.
Guerra feels that the camp is an opportunity for everyone to recognize the true potential of the kids, regardless of their disabilities.
?When you get a chance to see the parents see what they?re children have learned, they?re just so surprised,? she said. ?They think, ?I never thought my child would be able to do something like this.??
The children enjoy it as much as the parents.
?I feel happy,? said 10-year-old camper Jake Stempel when asked about his surfing experience.
Jack Ruderman, a 9-year-old camper, agreed.
?I do it because I like to surf and ? I have a lot a friends,? he said.
In the future, CARD and Miami Beach are talking about expanding the recreational activities to other sports, according to Guerra. In addition to the surf program, CARD already hosts soccer and tennis programs.
Saleta hopes more children will be able to participate in this rewarding experience.
?It?s an amazing experience for these kids,? she said. ?It?s amazing to see their face when they get up on the board.?

Scientists have confirmed the discovery of the first-ever, two-headed bull shark.
The study, led by Michigan State University and appearing in the Journal of Fish Biology, confirmed the specimen, found in the Gulf of Mexico April 7, 2011, was a single shark with two heads, rather than conjoined twins.
There have been other species of sharks, such as blue sharks and tope sharks, born with two heads. This is the first record of dicephalia in a bull shark, said Michael Wagner, MSU assistant professor of fisheries and wildlife, who confirmed the discovery with colleagues at the Florida Keys Community College.
"This is certainly one of those interesting and rarely detected phenomena," Wagner said. "It's good that we have this documented as part of the world's natural history, but we'd certainly have to find many more before we could draw any conclusions about what caused this."
The difficulty of finding such oddities is due, in part, to creatures with abnormalities dying shortly after birth. In this instance, a fisherman found the two-headed shark when he opened the uterus of an adult shark. The two-headed shark died shortly thereafter and had little, if any, chance to survive in the wild, Wagner added.
"You'll see many more cases of two-headed lizards and snakes," he said. "That's because those organisms are often bred in captivity, and the breeders are more likely to observe the anomalies."
The shark was brought to the marine science department at Florida Keys Community College. From there, it was transported to Michigan State's campus for further examination.
Wagner and his team were able to detail the discovery with magnetic resonance imaging. Without damaging the unique specimen, the MRIs revealed two distinct heads, hearts and stomachs with the remainder of the body joining together in back half of the animal to form a single tail.
As part of the published brief, Wagner noted that some may want to attribute the deformed shark to exposure to pollutants.
"Given the timing of the shark's discovery with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, I could see how some people may want to jump to conclusions," Wagner said. "Making that leap is unwarranted. We simply have no evidence to support that cause or any other."

The last look at the Apple, Android and Blackberry App Stores revealed over 600 combined health-related apps on the market. As well as ranging across many price-bands, they also range across many categories and niches.
Many apps these days come as a free version and to access better features a fee is required; though this fee is normally relatively small in line with people?s expectations. Normally the paid version offers the best features and the free versions give only very few or limited features.
However there are still some life-changing and sometimes life-saving options out there.?The categories on offer range from anything from the best sex positions to the best vegan restaurants, from baby name suggestions to calorie counters! The list appears to be endless.
Health & Fitness apps have become very popular because of vogue healthy lifestyle desires. As the world becomes more familiar with the benefits of a healthier lifestyle so will the competition for these apps in the marketplace. Most come with the same basic features ? including GPS locators, heart rate monitors, run times and route selectors.
The problem recently with health & fitness apps in particular has been the bug fixes and updates which have plagued this still relatively infantile market. Many users have lost interest with an app once it has crashed and lost all of their data and stats.
Here is a run-down of the best free apps on the market ranging from fitness to disease to treatments and medicines:
?
?
Nike+ Running ? Android and Apple
?
A handy running app that is very popular ? perhaps more so to do with the company behind it ? that in this case has more features concerned with your actual fitness schedule than many others on the market. Features include a heart-rate monitor, pace, times and a score out of ten for your fitness regime helps keep you on your toes for the duration of your fitness workout!
?

?
With over 15 million users this app has certainly been endorsed for its usability and features. With the ability to track and monitor your exercise regime on indoor and outdoor pursuits it is useful for outdoor runs, cycles and walking as well as gym treadmills, bikes and ski-machines. It also sync?s nicely with Google maps so you know your routes are up to date. Audio feedback and ?pep talks? from friends add some nice motivational aspects. If you upgrade to the premium version you can get real time weather updates too so you will never get caught out by the elements
?
?
GluCoMo ? (Apple) Glucose Buddy ? (Android)
?
Glucomo for the Apple device and Glucose buddy on Android is the ultimate app for diabetes sufferers. With reminders and updates on when to take insulin injections you can be rest assured of continuing your day without remembering the important things. This app is also free without any features withheld for a premium version meaning what you get from day one is what you will always get. Features include ? blood pressure, blood sugar level, weight and food controls, as well as the important insulin dosage reminders.
?
Calorie Counter by FatSecret ? Android, Blackberry and Apple
?
A great all round app for the weight and diet conscious. With an exercise diary, restaurant finder, recipes, weight tracker and more it really is a one-stop shop for weight-loss and general wellbeing and living. It also has a barcode scanner for health products that can be easily synced to your account and the exercise diary tells you how much daily exercise you need to burn those extra calories.
?
?
Calculate by QxMD (Android) ? iMedical (IPhone)
?
This range of apps is generally regarded as symptom calculators, and by and large is most effective for GP?s and Physicians. By filling out some information about yourself and your illness symptoms you can get a run-down of what your ailment may be. This potentially has the ability to save GP?s many hours of working time and so has to be seen as a revolutionary idea. With symptoms spanning general practice, internal medicine, cardiology, paediatrics, gastroenterology and neurology this is surely the foundation of a great working app and something great to come.
?
?
Daily Ab Workout Android and Apple.
This app is a take on a daily planner designed to get your abs trim and firm. The app also comes in ladies and men?s versions ? bum, tums, arms, yoga etc; with automatic upgrades and skill levels to boot. Using the tools 5 to 10 minute routine daily can result in firmer abs in just 3 months. There is a relatively inexpensive paid version too which gives you videos and variances on exercises.
?
?
First Aid by British Red Cross
?
This intuitive app is well and truly a life-saver, offering tips, advice and step-by-step instructions on dealing with cases such as asthma attacks, bleeding, breaks, choking, seizures, strokes and so on. This is really an app everyone should have in their pocket. However is only a really useful as a tool to reinforce knowledge of first aid, not first aid certification itself.
?
It is clear that as people coin on to the benefits of having health advice, tips and information at their fingertips apps will become more important in everyday life, and even help companies, health institutions and GP?s in their general practice. With segmenting categories and niches we will see a further proliferation in services ? including apps for both men and women, young and old and both active and inactive. Apps are becoming more commonplace and their use continues to increase year-on-year, watch this space for major advances in the health industry.

Mar. 25, 2013 ? Hybrid ribbons of vanadium oxide (VO2) and graphene may accelerate the development of high-power lithium-ion batteries suitable for electric cars and other demanding applications.
The Rice University lab of materials scientist Pulickel Ajayan determined that the well-studied material is a superior cathode for batteries that could supply both high energy density and significant power density. The research appears online this month in the American Chemical Society journal Nano Letters.
The ribbons created at Rice are thousands of times thinner than a sheet of paper, yet have potential that far outweighs current materials for their ability to charge and discharge very quickly. Cathodes built into half-cells for testing at Rice fully charged and discharged in 20 seconds and retained more than 90 percent of their initial capacity after more than 1,000 cycles.
"This is the direction battery research is going, not only for something with high energy density but also high power density," Ajayan said. "It's somewhere between a battery and a supercapacitor."
The ribbons also have the advantage of using relatively abundant and cheap materials. "This is done through a very simple hydrothermal process, and I think it would be easily scalable to large quantities," he said.
Ajayan said vanadium oxide has long been considered a material with great potential, and in fact vanadium pentoxide has been used in lithium-ion batteries for its special structure and high capacity. But oxides are slow to charge and discharge, due to their low electrical conductivity. The high-conductivity graphene lattice that is literally baked in solves that problem nicely, he said, by serving as a speedy conduit for electrons and channels for ions.
The atom-thin graphene sheets bound to the crystals take up very little bulk. In the best samples made at Rice, fully 84 percent of the cathode's weight was the lithium-slurping VO2, which held 204 milliamp hours of energy per gram. The researchers, led by Rice graduate student Yongji Gong and lead author Shubin Yang, said they believe that to be among the best overall performance ever seen for lithium-ion battery electrodes.
"One challenge to production was controlling the conditions for the co-synthesis of VO2 ribbons with graphene," Yang said. The process involved suspending graphene oxide nanosheets with powdered vanadium pentoxide (layered vanadium oxide, with two atoms of vanadium and five of oxygen) in water and heating it in an autoclave for hours. The vanadium pentoxide was completely reduced to VO2, which crystallized into ribbons, while the graphene oxide was reduced to graphene, Yang said. The ribbons, with a web-like coating of graphene, were only about 10 nanometers thick, up to 600 nanometers wide and tens of micrometers in length.
"These ribbons were the building blocks of the three-dimensional architecture," Yang said. "This unique structure was favorable for the ultrafast diffusion of both lithium ions and electrons during charge and discharge processes. It was the key to the achievement of excellent electrochemical performance."
In testing the new material, Yang and Gong found its capacity for lithium storage remained stable after 200 cycles even at high temperatures (167 degrees Fahrenheit) at which other cathodes commonly decay, even at low charge-discharge rates.
"We think this is real progress in the development of cathode materials for high-power lithium-ion batteries," Ajayan said, suggesting the ribbons' ability to be dispersed in a solvent might make them suitable as a component in the paintable batteries developed in his lab.
Co-authors of the new paper are Rice graduate students Daniel Hashim and Lulu Ma; research scientist Zheng Liu; former Rice visiting researcher Liang Zhan, now an associate professor at East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai; and faculty fellow Robert Vajtai. Ajayan is the Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor in Engineering and a professor of mechanical engineering and materials science, chemistry, and chemical and biomolecular engineering.
The work was funded by the U.S. Army Research Office and the Office of Naval Research through a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative grant and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship grant.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Just like old times for Duke.
Rasheed Sulaimon scored 21 points, Seth Curry had 17 and the No. 2 seed Blue Devils beat seventh-seeded Creighton 66-50 on Sunday night to advance to the NCAA round of 16 for the fourth time in five years.
A year after they lost their NCAA tournament opener, the Blue Devils (29-5) return to the regional semifinals for the 27th time. They'll play No. 3 seed Michigan State (27-8) on Friday in Indianapolis.
Let upsets strike down the other heavy favorites. It's back to business as usual for the Blue Devils.
"We've got another five days to live here," coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "We've going to have to be really good playing Michigan State."
The Blue Devils will have to silence the whistle to keep the run alive. Mason Plumlee, Josh Hairston and Ryan Kelly battled foul trouble all game long that could have doomed the Blue Devils. Throw in 39 percent shooting, and the Blue Devils are far from playing their best in March.
While other high-seeded teams like Gonzaga and Georgetown made early exits, the Blue Devils are moving on to Indy.
"It was just so difficult," Krzyzewski said. "It was the best defense we played all year."
Florida Gulf Coast beat San Diego State 81-71 in the opener in Philadelphia that had the crowd of more than 20,000 buzzing after the upset win.
Duke's victory could not match it in excitement or intensity.
But that's OK for the Blue Devils. They're not in it for style points. They're here to win Krzyzewski's fifth national championship.
Still, the Blue Devils haven't advanced past the round of 16 since Krzyzewksi won his fourth national championship in 2010. They lost last year to Lehigh and spent their first three days in Philadelphia still having to answer for that one. Yes, even after they beat Albany in the second round.
Creighton (28-8) went cold and never made a serious run in the second half. Doug McDermott scored 21 points but made only four baskets.
"They did a great job on me, really physical, switched on every screen making it frustrating," McDermott said. "I missed a lot of shots I usually make, so that was unfortunate.
With McDermott slumping, the Bluejays were knocked out in the third round by an ACC team for the second straight season. They played their final game under the Missouri Valley Conference banner and move on next season to the Big East.
"They're a big reason Creighton moved to the Big East," coach Greg McDermott said of his team.
Foul trouble hounded the Blue Devils from the opening tip. Plumlee hit the bench after he was whistled for his fourth foul early in the second half.
Hairston picked up his fourth foul at the 15:21 mark, allowing Ethan Wragge to convert a three-point play that inched the Bluejays closer.
Curry came right back with a 3-pointer and followed with a layup to make it 39-30. Plumlee and Kelly, each with four fouls, returned to the game as Krzyzewski clearly wanted his best players in there to try and put away Creighton.
"Seth got a couple of big ones for us," Krzyzewski said.
The usually sure-shooting Bluejays never found their groove.
Gregory Echenique had no chance on a wayward alley-oop lob that knocked off the backboard, and he fumbled the ball the next time down. Amile Jefferson scored off the second turnover for an 11-point lead. Hundreds of Duke fans stood in appreciation, and the program's 2,000th career win was in the bag.
Hairston was called for his fifth foul at the midway point of the second half, leaving the Blue Devils without a key frontcourt reserve. Plumlee fouled out with just under 3 minutes left.
But the Bluejays clanged brick after brick. The missed 17 of 19 3-pointers and shot only 30 percent from the field. McDermott, their All-American, was 4 of 16 and 12 of 12 from the free throw line.
McDermott gamely did his best to keep the Bluejays afloat by getting to the line. He hit two with 7:29 left to cut it to nine but went more than 18 minutes without a field goal. Without his 3-point shooting keeping Duke's defense honest ? Krzyzewksi called him one of the best offensive players he's seen in the last decade ? the Bluejays were sunk.
"It was a tough way to go out," McDermott said. "It's hard letting the seniors down tonight. It doesn't take away from the last two years."
Curry's second 3-pointer pushed it back to 11 and Sulaimon followed with another 3 to wrap it up.
Plumlee finished with 10 points and the Blue Devils made 21 of 28 free throws.
Tyler Thornton banked in a running 3 at the buzzer to send Duke into halftime with a 29-23 lead. The Bluejays missed 12 of their first 15 shots, then missed 10 of 13 to open the second half. They lost in the third round to North Carolina last year and talked all season about wanting to get back to this point. They would go no farther. The Bluejays haven't advanced to a regional semifinal since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985.
Krzyzewksi again celebrated a big win in Philadelphia, though with far less drama. The Blue Devils topped Kentucky in the 1992 East Regional final on Christian Laettner's buzzer-beater in perhaps the greatest game and shot in the tournament's 75-year history.

Between live S&M demonstrations in a historic armory and bedazzling vibrator contests, San Franciscans are nothing if not sex positive.
Which is why we were utterly shocked to learn that our local women are less sexually experienced than their counterparts in other cities. According to a recent survey by sugar daddy dating service SeekingArrangement.com (yes, that is actually a thing), one in ten San Francisco women admitted to still being a virgin. Quite a bit higher than the national average, say the report's authors.
Then again, a similar study -- this time by America's most trusted condom brand -- found us all to be a bunch of free-wheeling, polyamorous sex addicts. So you be the judge.
In the mean time, we've rounded up the best places in the city to lose one's virginity. Just in case those sugar daddies are on to something.
There are <a href="http://www.truenudists.com/location/baker-beach/" target="_blank">so many naked people</a> on the "secret part" of Baker Beach that you'll probably just blend in.
Bonus points if you're on a moving float.
It was named one of the <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Gitane-a-finalist-in-restroom-contest-3837024.php" target="_blank">top ten public restrooms</a> in America. And there aren't even any stalls.
Just be sure to <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/07/uc-berkeley-hook-ups_n_2791550.html" target="_blank">refer to this handy guide</a> first.
A king-sized bed, 500-count Egyptian cotton sheets, overlooking the city below...may as well do it right.

Toenails measure toxic exposure to chromium in Garfield, N.J.. Toenails of residents will be tested to measure the level of exposure to toxic chemicals over the past 18 months.
By Katie Zezima,?Associated Press / March 25, 2013
Researchers are collecting toenail clippings from residents of Garfield, N.J., in an effort to determine how much toxic chromium may have accumulated in their bodies from contaminated groundwater. But something with very dangerous potential lies below the surface, officials say.

The residents' toenails will provide confirmation.
A plume of hexavalent chromium, a metal used in industrial production that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls a "well-established carcinogen," has spread under Garfield, putting about one-tenth of the city's homes ? about 600 structures and 3,600 residents ? at risk.
The Environmental Protection Agency is about to start drilling on the spill site to determine how much chromium is pooled beneath and remove tainted soil. The agency is also testing the broader area to determine how it will be cleaned up. Now a group of scientists from New York University is working to assess how much chromium residents may have been exposed to.
Researchers will collect toenail clippings from city residents. The nails will be tested for traces of chromium. Because toenails grow slowly, it is possible to see how much chromium has accumulated in the body over the past 18 months or so, said Judith Zelikoff, a professor of environmental medicine at New York University.
"Our major goal is to try to relieve their fears," Zelikoff said. "With the economy, they can't sell their homes. They don't know if they got exposed."
The contamination started 30 years ago, when thousands of pounds of hexavalent chromium? the same stuff that sickened Californians whose story was told in "Erin Brockovich" ? leaked from a tank at the EC Electroplating Co., a factory surrounded on all sides by houses and apartments. The state started cleaning up the spill but stopped two years later. In 1993, chromium was found at a now-shuttered firehouse and later in homes.
The EPA designated the area as a Superfund site ? marking it as of the nation's most toxic uncontrolled hazardous waste sites ? in 2011, and officials cautioned residents to stay out of their basements to prevent potential chromium exposure. EPA officials removed chromium from the building and demolished it last year, and found that some tanks had holes in them, potentially releasing even more chromium into the groundwater.
Officials say the contamination has not affected the city's drinking water, which is drawn from an outside source. Instead, they worry that people could inhale chromium dust that has been found in basements where groundwater has leached in.

Hey guys, im trying to use a my.setting setting as an object (I hope thats correct). What I want is to use it, like this:Dim mysetting As Object = My.Settings.setting 'Now, the setting will be changed to something like Form1.Button1 'And I want to use mysetting instead of form1.Button1, like; mysetting.Backgroundimage.fromfile ("C:\Users\Admin\Pictures\pic1.png")
This doesn't work, sadly. So im wondering if its possible, because it would cut my code down by quite a few lines.
Thanks in advance

Why not store all the object properties as an XML string and then store that string in the my.settings? Then, when you need it, you can pop out the XML, cycle through the nodes, and create the object?

Well, 3 reasons
1. I have no idea what you're talking about cause im a newb
2. I have no idea what you're talking about cause im a newb
3. I have no idea what you're talking about cause im a newb
But im sure my method would work with a bit of tweaking.

GUI objects are quite big.. but if you must - drill down the 'type' to 'browse'.. then drill down to the windows forms until you find the GUI control you want and there you go.Typically my objects are all types across the board so I just save their important bits in XML and then save that XML string in the my.settings under 'string'.
