Safer spinach? Scientist's technique dramatically reduces E. coli numbers

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? University of Illinois scientists have found a way to boost current industry capabilities when it comes to reducing the number of E. coli 0157:H7 cells that may live undetected on spinach leaves.

?By combining continuous ultrasound treatment with chlorine washing, we can reduce the total number of foodborne pathogenic bacteria by over 99.99 percent,? said Hao Feng, a U of I professor of food science and human nutrition.

According to Feng, the USDA is looking for proposed technologies that can achieve a 4 to 6 log reduction in pathogen cells (a 6 log reduction would achieve a million-fold reduction in pathogenic bacteria). The food processing industry can now achieve a 1 log or tenfold reduction. In comparison, the U of I technique yields a 4 log reduction.

?Combining technologies is the key to bridging the gap between our current capacity and what USDA would like to see. The use of ultrasound exposure during chlorine washing gives the industry a way to significantly enhance microbial safety,? he said.

Feng?s pilot-scale system uses three pairs of large-area ultrasonic transducer boxes to form a channel through which ultrasound is provided to spinach leaves that are undergoing a continuous-flow chlorine wash. Spatial uniformity of ultrasound distribution was confirmed by tests using metallic foil.

The scientist said that continuous flow and uniformity of the field are key elements in the success of the process.

?Previous work with ultrasound used a tank or a medical-style probe, which doesn?t provide consistent and even distribution,? he noted.

System design is important for another reason, he said. ?Placement of the produce as it makes its way through the channel turns out to be very important. We had to find ways to make sure that leaves received similar exposure to ultrasound, taking care to minimize the chance that one leaf would block a nearby leaf?s exposure to the sound waves.?

If even part of a leaf escaped the full ultrasonic treatment, it could contaminate the rest of the produce, he said.

Feng and his team have used the technique on iceberg and romaine lettuce as well as spinach with similar results.

Co-authors of the paper, published in Innovative Food Science and Emerging Technologies, are the U of I?s Bin Zhou and Arne J. Pearlstein. Funding was provided by Food Technology Noord-Oost Nederland, with additional support from the USDA.

Knicks beat Mavericks 104-94 to stay unbeaten

(AP) ? The basket was shaking and Tyson Chandler was screaming, definitely toward though maybe not at the voices he recognized near the Dallas bench.

His more important words came long before that dunk that helped the New York Knicks put away the Mavericks.

Chandler told his teammates at halftime not to let their perfect record get ruined, and they responded with a 104-94 victory Friday night to improve their best start in nearly two decades to 4-0.

"Tyson's always vocal. In the locker room he was very vocal, just about not letting this one slip away from us," said Carmelo Anthony, who led the Knicks with 31 points.

"We got up to play in that third quarter, second half, got up defensively, denied the passing lanes and we played our defense that we've been playing for the last week."

Reserve JR Smith added 22 points for the Knicks, the only unbeaten team in the NBA. They hadn't been perfect after four games since the 1993-94 team started 7-0 en route to the NBA Finals.

The Knicks averaged 104.7 points and allowed just 85.3 per game while routing Miami and sweeping a home-and-home series from Philadelphia to start the season, but didn't seize control of this one for good until nearly the midpoint of the fourth quarter.

O.J. Mayo scored 23 points for the Mavericks, who had their three-game winning streak snapped and lost to the Knicks for just the fourth time in the last 22 meetings.

Playing without injured starters Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion, the Mavericks had shot 60 percent in consecutive games for the first time in franchise history and were averaging 116.3 points on 56.2 percent shooting during their win streak.

But they managed only two more field goals after Mayo's layup cut the Knicks' lead to 90-86 with 7:32 remaining. New York scored the next eight points, five from Anthony, to pull away.

"New York's a veteran team and if you give them more possessions and you give them possessions on catastrophic turnovers, they're going to convert them into points," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "They're a very good team. In my opinion they're one of the handful of teams that has a chance to come out of the East."

In the first meeting since Jason Kidd left Dallas to sign with New York, he played only 16 minutes as the Knicks went with Smith, who got hot in the third quarter while they opened an 84-78 lead.

Kidd seemed on the verge of returning to the Mavs in July before signing with the Knicks. Dallas owner Mark Cuban was angry, believing Kidd backed out of a deal, and said before the game he was done talking about the point guard.

With Kidd joining Chandler, the Knicks have two starters from the Mavs' 2011 NBA championship team, a club the aging Knicks mentioned often during the preseason as a team that showed older groups could win.

Chandler provided the game's first double-digit lead at 96-86 with a ferocious follow dunk and free throw after being fouled, screaming in the direction of the Dallas bench after the basket.

Chandler said he's disappointed the Mavs didn't re-sign him and others from the title team, never taking a shot at defending their crown. But he thinks the Knicks might be building something similar now.

"Definitely reminds me of the chemistry, personalities, personnel that we had," he said. "We were just really deep on that team. We hit teams with waves and teams couldn't really catch up with it, our first and second unit. It's the same thing here. We have great depth and that has to be our weapon."

New York finished with eight 3-pointers after making an NBA-record 43 in its first three games.

"They're playing hard and they're getting wins," said Mavericks forward Elton Brand, back after missing a game following the birth of a child. "4-0, that's a good start for any team."

Anthony scored 10 points in the first quarter as the Knicks took a 25-23 lead. Mayo opened the second with consecutive 3-pointers, and seven straight points by Vince Carter later in the period gave Dallas a 41-32 lead. The Mavericks were ahead 57-55 at the break.

Notes: Marcus Camby made his season debut after sitting out the first three games while getting back in shape. He missed most of the preseason with a strained calf. The center became the fourth-oldest player in Knicks history at 38 years, 7 months, 18 days ? with two of the older ones coming this season. Herb Williams, now a Knicks assistant, was 41, 2 months and 16 days in his final appearance. Kurt Thomas is 40 and Jason Kidd is 39. Rasheed Wallace (38-1-23) rounds out the top five. ... For their heroic actions during Superstorm Sandy, the Knicks honored Jon Candelaria of New York, and Dr. Pradeep Mally, Gail Geraghty and Erica Chong of NYU Langone Medical Center with this month's Sweetwater Clifton "City Spirit" award, named for the team's first African-American player and recognizing those who have made a difference in the lives of others. Candelaria rescued a driver who was stuck in a stalled taxi that was nearly submerged by water, while the hospital employees carried infants to safety after the facility lost power. Also, an MSG Network and Garden of Dreams foundation fundraiser raised nearly $200,000 for storm aid. ... Both teams wore special blue shooting shirts with red and white and stars surrounding the NBA logo as the league celebrates Veterans Day this weekend.

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

Optimizing your website can help dramatically, but there are right and wrong ways to go about it. To get in good with the readers and remain on great terms with the search engines, just follow the advice and tips below for your initial campaign.

Site maps go a long way towards increasing your traffic. This allows all of your pages to be linked together. People will see the links on the side of your website and it will boost the amount of traffic that you will get to your site.

A site map which has your keywords included should be created. A site map acts as a central hub that allows visitors to go to any page on your site with no hassle. Site maps are used by search engine bots to find and rank websites.

You must research your keywords before attempting to optimize your site. When you are building your site, find what keywords work for you. By researching certain keywords, you will be able to find out exactly what people search for in your category. By using relevant keywords, you can help increase your rank on search engines.

Incorporate keywords and phrases into HTML tags to improve your sites SEO. Search engines put the most weight on words in the title tag of the site. Focus on the most relevant keywords.

Once you have discovered the right key phrases for your website, you should put that key phrase in your title. The title will be the first impression visitors get of your website, so make it relevant and interesting. By having a more generic word in the title, searchers who aren?t aware of your company?s name will still visit your website to find what they are looking for.

Before you outsource your SEO, investigate the company thoroughly. Lots of SEO companies will charge too much for sub-standard work. Find out from customers how they did and read the reviews and see what they said. This can help you to avoid scam artists.

Get a domain name for your site that is both memorable and relevant. A memorable name is important, especially for people who find your content through social media sites.

Before you attempt to start incorporating search engine optimization techniques, you should set up web analytics. Purchase the analytics software so you can have it available to see the results of your online marketing tactics. With the analytics software, you?ll be able to see which attempts are successful and where you?ll want to tweak your plan.

Focus on becoming an expert in just one or two aspects of SEO right away. There are not enough minutes in a day to get a hold of every technique. You need to focus your understanding on just a few areas and master them fully.

Consider using a pay-per-click strategy as a good affiliate marketing tactic. This is the simplest affiliate program to implement, so the pay for each click may not be high, but the total pay can add up quickly.

To maximize the benefits from your SEO efforts, always review your server headers. Poor server headers will lead to less success. See to it that your server header has a ?200 Ok? status whenever you are redirecting.

Consider advertising products through podcasting. Podcasts are visual or audio recordings, or sometimes streamed live, that give the consumer important information on the topics you want to cover in the show. People seem to like podcasts because they can record them and listen to or watch them at their convenience. Descriptions of your podcasts, then appear to search engines.

You should make sure that you website is geared toward your target market and is utilizing your keywords effectively. Always add relevant articles and content that includes your main keywords. Your target keywords should appear anywhere and everywhere ? not just in the text itself but also in your links, tags and page titles.

If you want to increase your site?s page ranking, consider purchasing a previously used domain name. If a domain name is over two years old, it gets higher search engine rankings by default. Consider searching for domain names that have been recently dropped as possibilities for your site.

If you are managing a business website, encourage the CEO or the owner of the business to become involved online. This is what gives the company a voice, and will increase the interest of your users.

Content is the most important aspect of search engine optimization. Your content should always be original, well written, focused and not too long. Do not overlook the importance of proper spelling and grammar. You can go a long way in search engine optimization if you put good content on your website.

If your site serves a market or audience with established ezines, contribute articles and other information with backlinks to your site. The great thing about eZines are that they are archived, so even if your article is found months later, it can still have usable links back to your site.

Research all of the SEO companies and choose one to get the most out of your marketing efforts. This is when your site is marketed in a way that will bring it up to the top of search engine results. You can often find great deals on these services.

As was stated earlier in the article, there are good and bad ways to go about search engine optimization. By only utilizing proven techniques you ben improve your ranking without being blocked.

Enjoying the Small Things: The First Gift: Magic Cabin Giveaway

There's something about the first holiday gift for me.? Usually purchased this time of year, it initiates a little burst of holiday enthusiasm and a settling feeling of "I did something to get this ball rolling."? And by ball, I mean shiny Christmas ornament with glitter on the outside and cheer?on the inside.? I'm all for letting November be November and giving Thanksgiving its time to shine.? But that's part of the fun of November for me--doing little things here and there that lead up to a more relaxing and fully enjoyable December.? Hence (holla for the word hence), the first gift.? Wrapped and waiting.??Every time I open?my closet doors I see it way up on the shelf, and it makes me smile.?

Photobucket

Last year, I finally did Christmas right and this year, we want to simplify even more.? I bought almost all of my gifts online last year, and I took the time to search for well-made toys that would A:) Last, B:) Really mean something to my girls, and?C:) Not take up a lot of room in our home.? I look for free shipping deals.? I keep an online wish list throughout the year of things I really love for my girls, and I use it to guide both my own gifts for them and to answer questions when grandparents ask what they want.? After years of buying Christmas gifts, I've realized less is more--hard to do but feels good when you stick to it.? I'd rather have a few really nice things that will last for my girls than a bunch of junk for them to open and forget about later.

Things I Like to Buy for Them:? Nice baby dolls (never gets old for them) and baby doll accessories (a good stroller, a few cute clothes, cloth doll diapers, bottle, etc.), toys that encourage imagination, educational toys and books, puzzles, crafts and art supplies, wood and felt toys

Things I Steer Away From:? Oversized things that will get in the way (we have a good kitchen set and a nice wood easel, and?two "big" toys is enough our house can handle), cheap plastic (although those little dress-up click clack shoes will always be a fave), things with little parts that will get lost

I clean out their toys this time of year as well--sort through the things we don't use to donate to Goodwill.? I'm getting better at this every year, and I'm finally getting the hang of simplifying my girls' rooms and belongings for not only an easier life (it stays clean!), but more appreciative children.?

So, on to the first gift.? We have a thing with baby dolls.? My mom has had a thing with baby dolls for years--she can talk for an hour about makes and models of dolls, where they are manufactured, how well they're made.? And my all time favorite gift memory from my childhood is when my sister and I received new baby dolls Christmas morning, delivered to our front door by a nurse (neighbor my parents bribed) in her hospital scrubs.? They were wrapped in receiving blankets, and we proudly reached out for them like real mamas.? (They were also filled with this jelly-like substance to make them heavy, and three days later we?broke them?open and cleaned out the jelly, shoving it in?the door?pockets of?our?Chevy Citation while our oblivious parents drove to Grandma's...but that's a moot point).

We've had several different ones throughout the years, but most of our dolls?have been cheap things Brett excitedly comes home with from the grocery store because he does that sort of thing.? But this baby?? I saw her in the Magic Cabin catalogue and fell in love.? Designed in Sweden (I'm speakin' my mom's language now), the Rubens Barn dolls have soft-sculpted bodies and weighted bottoms to make them feel real.? Nella's going to love hers.

Photobucket

There are a number of Rubens Barn dolls to choose from--both babies and kids and girl and boy dolls. And I love the cloth bottle and pacifier set (the little mouth opens on the doll).? One comment from this post will be randomly chosen to receive a free Rubens Barn doll, reader's choice, courtesy of Magic Cabin. You can find Magic Cabin on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest as well.? We love their well-made toys that encourage imagination.
We're also simplifying our wrapping this year.? I'm usually tempted by beautiful wrapping paper and rows of pretty ribbon in craft stores, but I am loving the simplicity and cost-effectiveness this year of parchment paper, baker's twine, paper doily tags and $1 stamps.

Photobucket
The baker's twine is actually a $10 giant skein of fine yarn.? It lasted us through all of last year's crafts and North Pole Party (coming again this year!) and we have gobs left for this year.

*****

My favorite IG pic this week: A moment Nella and I shared where I danced her to sleep, serenaded by classical music. Our night weather finally qualifies for cozy fleecy jammies...I like.

Photobucket
Instagram is a free phone app.? You can find?us at?etst on Instagram.

Magic Cabin Rubens Barn doll winner announced in Monday's post. Tell me four things...

1.) What's streaming from your MP3/radio/CD player/record player (so many means of listening these days) right now?
2.) Last thing that made you smile.
3.) What you're looking forward to right now.
4.) Last thing you bought for yourself.

Mine:
1.)? James: Rhodes, Piano Recital
2.)? Nella and Brett playing the blanket throwing game
3.)? I'm going to the symphony tonight...alone.
4.)? A cinnamon crisp bagel, Panera

Pakistan's minority Hindus feel under attack

(AP) ? They came after dusk and chanted into the night sky "Kill the Hindus, kill the children of the Hindus," as they smashed religious icons, ripped golden bangles off women's arms and flashed pistols. It wasn't the first time that the Hindu temple on the outskirts of Pakistan's largest city was attacked, and residents here fear it will not be the last.

"People don't consider us as equal citizens. They beat us whenever they want," said Mol Chand, one of the teenage boys gathered at the temple. "We have no place to worship now."

It was the second time the Sri Krishna Ram temple has been attacked, and this time the mob didn't even bother to disguise their faces. The small temple, surrounded by a stone wall, is a tiny religious outpost in a dusty, hardscrabble neighborhood so far on the outskirts of the city that a sign on the main road wishes people leaving Karachi a good journey.

Local Muslim residents blamed people from a nearby ethnic Pashtun village for the attack, which took place in late September on the Day of Love for the Prophet, a national holiday declared by the government in response to an anti-Islam film made in the U.S. No one was seriously injured in the attack.

It was the latest in a rising tide of violence and discrimination against Hindus in this 95 percent Muslim country, where Islamic extremism is growing. Pakistan's Hindu community says it faces forced conversions of Hindu girls to Islam, a lack of legal recognition for their marriages, discrimination in services and physical abuse when they venture into the streets.

The story of the Hindu population in Pakistan is one of long decline. During partition in 1947, the violent separation of Pakistan and India into separate countries, hundreds of thousands of Hindus opted to migrate to India where Hinduism is the dominant religion. Those that remained and their descendants now make up a tiny fraction of Pakistan's estimated 190 million citizens, and are mostly concentrated in Sindh province in the southern part of the country.

Signs of their former stature abound in Karachi, the capital of Sindh. At the 150-year-old Swami Narayan Temple along one of the city's main roads, thousands of Hindus gather during the year to celebrate major religious holidays. Hindus at the 200-year-old Laxmi Narain Temple scatter the ashes of their cremated loved ones in the waters of an inlet from the Arabian Ocean.

But there are also signs of how far the community has fallen. Residents in a city hungry for land have begun to build over Hindu cemeteries, the community's leaders say. Hindus helped build Karachi's port decades ago, but none work there now.

Estimates of the size of the Hindu population in Pakistan are all over the map ? from 2.5 million or 10 million in Sindh province alone to 7 million across the country ? a reflection of the fact that the country hasn't had a census since 1998.

It isn't just Hindus who are facing problems. Other minorities like Christians, the mystical Muslim branch of Sufis and the Ahmadi sect have found themselves under attack in Pakistan, where the rise of Muslim fundamentalists has sometimes unleashed a violent opposition against those who don't follow their strict religious tenets.

The discrimination has prompted some Hindus to leave for India, activists warn, though the extent is not known. Around 3,000 Hindus left this year, part of a migration that began four years ago, sparked by discrimination and a general rise in crime in Sindh, said DM Maharaj, who heads an organization to help Hindus called Pakistan Hindu Sabha.

He said he recently talked to a group of Hindus preparing to move to India from rural Sindh, complaining that they can't eat in Muslim restaurants or that Muslim officials turned them down for farming loans. Even during recent floods, they said Muslims did not want them staying in the same refugee camps.

Other Hindu figures such as provincial assembly member Pitamber Sewami deny there's a migration at all, in a reflection of how sensitive the issue is. Earlier this year, there were a string of reports in Pakistani media about Hindus leaving the country, sparking a flurry of promises by Pakistani officials to investigate.

In India, a Home office official said the Indian government noticed an upward trend of people coming from Pakistan but called reports of Pakistanis fleeing to India "exaggerated." He said he does not have exact figures on how many Pakistani Hindus have stayed in India after entering the country on tourist visas. The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the topic.

There's more of a consensus of the seriousness of the problem of forced conversion of Hindus.

Zohra Yusuf, the president of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan says the pattern goes like this: A Hindu girl goes missing and then resurfaces days or weeks later married to a Muslim boy. During court hearings to determine whether the conversion was voluntary, students from nearby Islamic schools called madrassas often flood the room, trying to intimidate the judges by chanting demands that the conversion be confirmed.

Maharaj says he's tried to intervene in roughly 100 cases of forced conversions but has only succeeded in returning a girl safely back to her family once. If a girl decides to renounce Islam and return to Hinduism, she could be signing a death warrant for herself and her family even if her conversion was forced.

The Hindu community has also been hurt by a lack of unity within its ranks. Hindu society within Pakistan and elsewhere has historically been divided by caste, a system of social stratification in which the lower castes are often seen as inferior. Members of the lower castes in Pakistan say it wasn't until two girls from a high-caste family were forcibly converted this year that high-caste Hindus took the issue seriously, although it's been happening for years.

"We always fight our war ourselves," said Bholoo Devjee, a Hindu activist from Karachi, speaking about the lower castes.

In recent months the government has begun to take the concerns of the Hindu community more seriously. In Sindh province, legislators proposed a law to prevent forced conversions in part by implementing a waiting period before a marriage between a Hindu and a Muslim can go forward, and there's discussion about proposing such a law on the national level as well.

In the case of the Sri Krishna Ram temple, law enforcement authorities opened a blasphemy case against the people who rampaged through the building. But residents here are skeptical that these developments signify any long-term improvement in their plight. Weeks after the incident no arrests have been made, and the Hindus complain that no high-ranking Hindu officials have come to visit them or help them get compensation.

Sunda Maharaj, the spiritual leader at the temple, which was first attacked in January 2011, said he and the other residents do not want to move to India. "We are Pakistani," he said.

But he would like more help from the government, specifically a checkpoint to stop people from getting close to the temple and money for the Hindus to buy weapons.

"Next time anyone comes we can kill them or die defending our temple," he said.

AT&T to invest $8 billion in wireless infrastructure

AT&T Logo

AT&T has just released its plans regarding a massive investment in both its wireless and wireline infrastructure. Over the next three years, AT&T plans to invest a total of $14 billion -- $8 billion in wireless, $6 billion in wireline -- to improve all aspects of its services. Although its 4G LTE network has been rolling out at a steady pace, it is upping expectations with this new influx of spending. The new goal is to cover 300 million Americans with 4G LTE coverage by the end of 2014.

AT&T plans to leverage its recent spectrum acquisitions in the most populous markets to help improve 4G LTE networks that have already been deployed. Hopefully with this new round of investment AT&T will offer a truly nation-wide LTE network in the near future.

The Domain King Rick Schwartz Launches JointVentures.com | The ...

In a press release issued today Rick Schwartz announced the launch of JointVentures.com which allows ?CEOs and marketing executives of small, medium and large companies with growth ambitions to get a to get a million dollar website domain name? without the high price tag or capital layout of category defining domain names frequently reported sold in today?s secondary market. ?

Its actually a great idea.? We have several of these types of deals in the works and also have had success with leasing domains with the option to purchase them which works very well for company?s that don?t have the funds on hand to purchase the domain name.

Here is the rest of the press release:

?Internet entrepreneur Rick Schwartz, President and Co-Founder of eRealEstate.com and TargetedTraffic.com, host of the well-known annual conference for domain investors, T.R.A.F.F.I.C., has a joint venture proposal for the world?s business community.

?One look at the sales charts published by DNJournal can confirm that generic and brandable website domain names such as Homemade.com, Tradeshows.com, VirtualTours.com or Widgets.com ? among over 1000 similarly valuable domains available- could sell in the secondary market for millions of dollars, but have been set aside for free use or to lease to qualifying companies.

?True to his theme of embracing premium generic ?.com? website domain names, Mr. Schwartz is making the announcement using new platform JointVentures.com. The new platform will guide companies wanting to differentiate their brand online to secure a premium generic ?.com? website domain name with zero up-front capital cost as a member of the eRealEstate Family of Websites through a joint venture or a leasing arrangement.
?
Member companies apply for a profit-sharing joint venture with JointVentures.com to use their chosen domain name with no cost and no risk, and if selected receive the exclusive right to use and develop the premium domain name of their choice in exchange for a domain partnership deal based on pay-per-lead, pay-per-sale, pay-per-call, and/or percentage equity stake. Domain name lease agreements for an affordable monthly fee are also available.

?After only 18 domain name sales in 18 years, totaling over ten million dollars, including transactions that received international news such as iReport.com sold to media company CNN for $750,000, Men.com for $1.3 million, Candy.com for $3 million + royalties, and Property.com for $4 million plus stock, Rick Schwartz claims that selling domain names for cash is not a part of his company eRealEstate.com?s continued business model with a portfolio of thousands of valuable domains.?

?I started in this business in 1995 with a 20 year plan, and we are now in the final phases,? says Schwartz. He continues: ?Our business does not have the resources, time, or infrastructure necessary to actively go into all of the business industries for which we own domain names receiving traffic, generating over 100,000 potential customers every day. In fact, we never planned to do so. Instead, today we lease our domain names or joint venture with companies to develop them into website businesses, and then receive a fair percentage of our partners? increased profits.?

Over 3,000,000 consumers per month visit the eRealEstate Family of Websites, an alliance of independent websites including some of the most popular category-defining destination website domain names in the world- such as Candy.com, BirthdayParty.com, PunchBowl.com, ChiantiWine.com, HelicopterCharter.com, CubicZirconia.com, Property.com, and many more, all operated by domain lessees, joint venture partners and other agreements.

The eRealEstate Family of Websites, and eRealEstate.com principals, are proud to have been featured in respected news and media outlets such as: CNN, MSNBC, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, International Herald-Tribune, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Miami Herald, San Francisco Chronicle, Palm Beach Post, AOL Money, TechCrunch, Yahoo Finance, Huffington Post, and Newsweek.

For additional information on the marketing, branding, credibility, memorability, and business growth benefits of operating a business online from a premium generic ?.com? domain name such as those we offer are encouraged to review the information and list of category defining domain names provided at http://www.JointVentures.com and apply while opportunities are still available.

JointVentures.com services will also be available to domain investors that have category defining domain names and others of obvious great value. Great domains with low earnings on PPC can increase domain investor payouts by large multiples with just our standard $1500/month annual lease. The cost of which is still just a fraction of a full running brick and mortar store capable of attracting mostly customers from a very specific and small geographic area compared to a worldwide presence with unlimited expansion capabilities.

JointVentures.com does not accept .net, .org or any country specific domain names as well as any other extension. .Com only!

Soft launch in progress now with the official opening on Saturday December 1, 2012.

We wish Rick the best of luck with this new venture.

Gas still hard to come by; N.Y. probes gouging

19 hrs.

Updated at 3 p.m. ET:?A week after Superstorm Sandy swept ashore, drivers and others seeking fuel continued to?face lines and frustration in New York and New Jersey as authorities worked to restore the complex supply network of pipelines, refineries and distribution points.

New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman launched an investigation into possible price gouging on gas, generators and other items, saying he has received more than 400 complaints. Some consumers complained?of being charged $10 for a box of matches and $7 for a loaf of bread. A?similar investigation was?launched last week in New Jersey.

"Our office has zero tolerance for price gouging," Schneiderman said in a statement.?"We are actively investigating hundreds of complaints we've received from consumers of businesses preying on victims of Hurricane Sandy, and will do everything we can to stop unscrupulous individuals from taking advantage of New Yorkers trying to rebuild their lives."

New York's law does not specifically define gouging but prohibits retailers from charging "unconscionably excessive" prices in an emergency.

New Jersey's Division of Consumer Affairs said it has issued subpoenas to 100 businesses across the state, stepping up its investigation into more than 1,200 consumer complaints, mainly about alleged price?gouging at?gas stations, hardware stores, convenience stores and hotels, according to Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa.

In some cases gas?stations reportedly raised prices by more than $1 a gallon after the storm,?according to ConsumerAffairs.com.?The state also has?received complaints about stations charging more to fill up hand-held canisters than to fill car gas tanks in violation of the law, the website reported.

Relief was?in sight as barges and military planes have been deliver fueling to terminals since Thursday. But authorities have had trouble moving the fuel to consumers, in part because so many gas stations still have no power, rendering their pumps useless.

"It's like war," Sam Aushulumov told NBC News near a Gulf station in Brooklyn where he had been waiting more than three hours with just one gallon of gas left in his Volvo. The station on Coney Island Avenue had seven police officers keeping order, ?a line of cars stretching nine blocks and 65 people standing in line with gas canisters.

Taxi driver Joseph Mosely, waiting in line with two, five-gallon canisters, estimated he had lost $1,000 in income so far due to the storm.

"No gas, no income," he said.

In addition, more than a dozen of the 20 main?terminals in New Jersey remain offline, according to CNBC.?reports CNBC.

The Coast Guard was busy cleaning up several oil spills, including a leak on the Arthur Kill waterway, which separates Staten Island in New York City from New Jersey. Tankers damaged by Sandy spilled diesel fuel into the waterway last week and crews were still pumping contaminated water on Sunday afternoon.?

Yet another cleanup effort was under way a few miles on the waterway, near Kinder Morgan's Perth Amboy, N.J., terminal, where the Coast Guard said it had recovered 780,000 gallons of an oil-and-water mixture.?Kinder Morgan, however, said there was no spill from its Perth Amboy facility.?

As more area residents returned to work, anxious drivers trying to fill up continued to strain the system.

Paul Eng of Queens told NBC News he waited for two hours only to be turned away, with police watching carefully, when gas ran out. Another station near his home had ?lines that wrapped around the city block and wait times of three and a half hours," he said.

However, he's not letting the situation make him feel desperate.

He still has a quarter tank of gas left in his Honda CR-V and an all-electric Ford Focus in the garage. ?All batteries, no gas needed,? he said.

John Horfmeister, former CEO of Shell Energy, said the long lines were being driven more by fear than simple demand.

"Fear (that) when you need gas there won't be any," he told TODAY. "The drivers put excess demand on a system that is undersupplied."

Horfmeister said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie made a good decision in ordering 1970s style gas rationing, in which motorists can only buy gas on odd- or even-numbered days, depending on their license plates.

"Odd-even was a good decision,?because it reduces demand by mandate," said Horfmeister.

Once power and the gas distribution system are fully restored, it will take about five days for the lines to die down as drivers get refueled and sorted out, Horfmeister said.

One bright spot in the fuel picture is that gas prices have been falling sharply nationwide, in part because of the decline in demand caused by Sandy, which has kept so many millions of people at home or close to home, because of lack of transportation, lack of power or the need to clean up.

The national average?gas price dropped seven cents over the past week to $3.47 a gallon, AAA says. That's cold comfort, however, to drivers who wait for hours who are then forced to drive off empty-handed when the underground tanks run dry.

Gas prices have risen slightly in New York and New Jersey, up three cents in New York and seven cents in New Jersey, the Associated Press reported.

Several websites have been launched to help drivers find fuel. Google Crisis Map?overlays vendor- and user-supplied data onto a Google Map to show where stations are open and reporting fuel levels. GasBuddy.com's mobile-device optimized site, drawing on user reports, showed ?No Fuel? at many?stations in the affected area.

Along New Jersey's busy Route 3 corridor, which feeds into Manhattan, several brand-name service stations remained shut, Reuters reported. A Hess outlet that held ample supplies in recent days had a line of about 30 cars -- down from more than 100 last week.?

Adding to the misery, a Nor'easter storm?was on track to hit the region?Wednesday with winds up to 55 mph, near-freezing temperatures and possibly?more power?outages.

Reuters and CNBC contributed to this report.

the splendor of Fall with a Gorgeous - Becca Bond Photography

When I pulled up to the house for this family, I was greeted by the whole group and dog, all in beautifully put-together wardrobe ensembles that reflected the gorgeous color of the season. ?The drive had been a bit stressful for me to say the least, fighting traffic and a persistent GPS taking me on nonsensical routes. ?So it was a breath of crisp autumn air when I saw these five (or six if we count the fur-baby) with their bright smiles and beautiful brown eyes. ?They turned my whole day around.

?

Our session together was fun and upbeat, complete with laughter, wrestling and silliness as well as some tender snuggling moments that made my camera?s little heart swell with love. ?I loved talking to each of the children individually and finding out about them. ?This is an interesting bunch! ?They love traveling, eating, and music.

The kids got along so well, each relationship was unique in it?s own way. ?Mom and Dad have instilled this home with a joie de vivre present and it was contagious. ?We went on a trek through their neighborhood and found colorful leaves and golden sunlight, swung on tire swings and rolled in the grass. ?As our session was concluding, I even got to hear Dad and C play some guitar together. ?It was perfect!

K family, thank you so much!

XOXO

NYC Marathon runners fill unexpected free time

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sue Johnson refuses to give New York City any more money.

She preferred to shell out for the change fee to move her flight home to Pittsburgh up by 24 hours - leaving on the day she was supposed to run the New York City Marathon.

Many of the runners who had descended on the city from all over the globe worked out their frustrations with a jog Saturday through Central Park, site of a finish line that will never be crossed. Some scrambled to rebook return flights. Others made sightseeing plans for the unexpected free time.

Whether from Europe, South America or elsewhere, their sentiment was the same. Sympathy for the victims of Superstorm Sandy. Understanding of why city officials canceled Sunday's race. But bitterness that the decision was made Friday instead of earlier in the week, before they boarded planes.

And some, like Johnson, voiced suspicions that the last-minute announcement was a ploy by city officials to lure entrants to New York so they would still spend money at local businesses.

"They get the best of both worlds," she said after wrapping up a run Saturday.

The runners had dragged their bodies through months of training, often making preparations years in advance and saving money for what costs thousands of dollars for many international entrants.

Diego Pellegrino and his wife kept their plans to stay in New York through Friday. But he had imagined biking around, shopping and eating well all week with the sense of accomplishment of completing his first marathon.

"The illusion is broken," he said.

Pellegrino will still take part in a sporting event midday Sunday: With no race to run, he'll make his first visit to Madison Square Garden for an NBA game, cheering on fellow Argentine Pablo Prigioni of the Knicks against the Philadelphia 76ers.

On a crisp, sunny Saturday, Central Park looked the part of the usual telegenic backdrop to the marathon's final miles. Other than some downed branches, the runners who chugged along the paths saw no evidence of the storm that knocked out power and flooded homes all over the metropolitan area.

A block of sidewalk just outside the park was cordoned off, stacks and stacks of boxes of orange jackets originally intended for marathon volunteers waiting to be donated to shelters. On this Saturday, runners would usually carb load at Marathon Eve Dinner. That, too, was canceled.

More New Yorkers got electricity Saturday, but frustrations mounted over gasoline shortages as refueling sites turned into traffic jams of horn-honking confusion. Gas rationing went into effect in northern New Jersey, while crowds lined up at free fuel distribution sites in New York's boroughs.

The blue and orange structure above the finish line remained up, though nobody could run under it. Barricades kept people a few yards away, creating the feel of a tourist attraction: Runners stood against them to have their photo taken with "Finish" in the background. Many wore NYC Marathon gear, souvenirs from an event that never occurred.

Some runners organized their own impromptu marathon routes this weekend. Others will gather on Staten Island on Sunday morning as they would have for the marathon. They'll take off running ? to deliver supplies to residents devastated by the storm.

"We initially were bummed, but also saddened by the perception that runners were indifferent to the needs of other people," said Jordan Metzl, a sports medicine doctor in New York. "We wanted to turn a negative to a positive."

American star Meb Keflezighi, the 2009 men's champion, said some of the elite runners were considering entering upcoming marathons in Japan and Philadelphia to take advantage of their training. But he may take some time off.

For all the conspiracy theories from out-of-town runners, the city will take in far less than the estimated $340 million the marathon would have brought.

Anthony King, owner of the bar Finnegans Wake along the race course on Manhattan's East Side, had the mixed feelings of a New Yorker and a local businessman. He felt for other merchants who would lose much-needed revenue, but agreed with the mayor's ultimate decision.

"We're going to miss all the excitement," he said.

Race organizer New York Road Runners has cancellation insurance but must sort out the effects on contracts with elite runners, sponsors and broadcasters. NYRR President Mary Wittenberg said Friday that for now organizers were sticking with their policy of not refunding entry fees, but it would be reviewed.

Susan Bourque was in the car, halfway between Boston and New York, when her father called Friday evening to say the race was canceled. Still on the road, Bourque started researching whether she could enter a different marathon in the next couple weeks so as not to waste her training. Sure enough, Sunday's race in Manchester, N.H., had extended its registration deadline to attract jilted New York runners.

Bourque and her husband kept on driving because their two children had never been to the Big Apple. They arrived at 9:30 p.m. and squeezed in visits to the Empire State Building and Times Square before heading back to New England at midday Saturday, pleasantly surprised their hotel refunded the rate with their early departure.

Francesco Caielli, Mario Di Sabato and Luciano Sala were two hours from landing in New York on Friday when they saw the news on the plane's video screens. At least their trip was smooth: A friend whose initial flight was canceled flew from their native Italy to Hong Kong then New York, determined to make the marathon.

And now there's no race.

Di Sabato scoffed that if the same thing happened in his home country, outsiders would accuse the Italians of stereotypical disorganization. But this fiasco took place under the watch of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

In his first comments since canceling the race, Bloomberg told WCBS-TV on Saturday his message to out-of-town runners was: "I'm sorry. I fought the battle, and sometimes things don't work out."

Runners signed up this year will be guaranteed entry into the 2013 marathon or the half-marathon in March, a valuable promise since it's so hard to get into the race. That could leave few spots next year for anyone else, though.

But some vowed to never again enter the NYC Marathon. Pia Nielsen, who flew in from Copenhagen, said city and race officials would have to regain her trust.

Lucy Marquez said she would come back, even as tears filled her eyes at the thought of the three young children she left at home in Mexico to race what would have been her first marathon.

"Shock. Denial. Rage," is how Marquez described the stages of digesting the news that the race had been scrapped. Twelve years ago, she watched her father run the course.

"I love New York City," she said. "This is the marathon I want to run."

Battered by storm, Staten Islanders feel forgotten

(AP) ? Gazing at her bungalow, swept from its foundation and tossed across the street, Janice Clarkin wondered if help would ever come to this battered island off the coast of Manhattan.

"Do you see anybody here?" she asked, resignation etched on her face. "On the news, the mayor's congratulating the governor and the governor's congratulating the mayor. About what? People died."

Staten Island was devastated beyond recognition by superstorm Sandy and suffered the highest death toll of all of New York City's boroughs, including two young brothers who were swept from their mother's arms by the swirling sea and drowned. Yet days after the waters receded, residents feel ignored and forgotten.

That sense of isolation is deeply rooted on Staten Island, a tight-knit community that has long felt cut off from the bright lights of Manhattan.

"It's always been that way. We're a forgotten little island," said Catherine Friscia, who stood with tear-filled eyes across the street from the Atlantic Ocean in front of homes filled with water and where the air smelled like garbage and rotting fish.

"Nobody pays attention to any of us over here."

In the shadow of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, dazed survivors roamed Staten Island's sand-covered streets amid ruined bungalows sagging under the weight of water that rose to the rooftops. Their contents lay flung in the street: Mud-soaked couches, stuffed animals and mattresses formed towering piles of wreckage. Boats were tossed like toys into roadways.

Residents washed their muddy hands with bottled water and handed out sandwiches to neighbors as they sifted through the soggy wreckage of their homes, searching for anything that could be salvaged. Spray-painted on the plywood that covered the first floor of one flooded home were the words: "FEMA CALL ME."

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano visited Staten Island on Friday, touring a shelter and a Red Cross distribution center where storm victims lined up to get food, water and clothing. A short distance away, a long line of cars snaked down the street, waiting to get to one of the few gas stations with fuel.

"We know that Staten Island took a particularly hard hit from Sandy, so we want to make sure that the right resources are brought here as quickly as possible to help this community, which is so very strong, recover even more quickly," said Napolitano, who was joined by Red Cross CEO Gail McGovern and Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro ? who a day earlier had sharply criticized what he said was the Red Cross's inadequate response in Staten Island.

Sticking together in the aftermath of the storm has kept Staten Islanders who lost everything from completely falling apart. Self-reliance is in their blood just as the island's very geography lends itself to a feeling of isolation from the mainland: the only way to get on or off is by car, bus or ferry.

After the storm, residents who had evacuated had to wait four days until the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge finally reopened to the public.

Most of the deaths were clustered in beachfront neighborhoods exposed to the Atlantic Ocean along the island's southeastern shore, an area of cinderblock bungalows and condominiums. Many of these homes were built decades ago ? originally as summer cottages ? and were not constructed to withstand the power of a major storm.

Diane Fieros wept as she recalled how she and her family survived by huddling on the third floor of their home across the street from the ocean, watching as the waves slammed into the house and the water rose higher and higher, shooting through cracks in the floor. A few blocks away, several people drowned.

"The deck was moving, the house was moving," she said. "We thought we were going to die. We prayed. We all prayed."

Fieros rode out the storm with her two sons, her parents and other extended family members. She pointed to a black line on the house that marked where the water rose: at least 12 feet above the ground.

"I told them, 'We die, we die together,'" she said, her voice cracking. "You saw the waves coming. Oh my God."

The storm has reopened old frictions among local officials who maintain Staten Island's infrastructure remains inadequate and that it has little sway on City Council compared to the other, bigger boroughs. In 1997, Staten Islanders voted in favor of seceding from New York City and incorporating on its own, buoyed by a belief that the borough pays more in taxes than it receives in return and that it's typically put last on the list for city services.

Molinaro suggested earlier this week that people should not donate money to the American Red Cross because that relief agency had neglected his borough. On Friday, however, he praised the Red Cross response and said he had spoken in anger.

"You see what the Red Cross is doing here today. They got 11 trucks out here For four days, this borough was cut off. No bridges, no way of getting off or on. Sometimes you get frustrated, you get angry. So I got angry, I was frustrated. I think they're doing a good job," Molinaro said.

The controversy surrounding this weekend's New York City Marathon, which was cancelled Friday by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, had special resonance among Staten Islanders. The lucrative race begins on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, and would have brought nearly 50,000 runners to an area not far from the Staten Island neighborhoods where people died.

Resident George Rosado, 52, who spent two days scrubbing a thick layer of sludge from his tiled floors and was preparing to demolish the water-logged walls of his home, found the idea repulsive. Except for a lone hospital van offering bottled water and power bars, Rosado had seen no federal, state or local agencies in his neighborhood, which sits about a block from the ocean.

"Nothing, nothing," he said, choking back tears. "We're hit hard. Homes are washed away. People are dying. Look around. You hear anything? It's quiet."

The city's tourism officials have long complained that Staten Island is the one borough that nobody wants to visit. But that has never bothered the half-million people who reside in this community, which is more suburban than urban and has a high concentration of police officers and firefighters.

It's a place families are drawn to by the allure of having their own backyard and raising their children in a small-town atmosphere.

"We were all around family, you know what I'm saying?" said 68-year-old Joseph Miley, Clarkin's cousin. "A person went away and there was always somebody here to watch their house, watch their animals."

In fact, so many relatives lived on the same street that they jokingly referred to it as "The Compound."

That's all been wiped out now. The family's mud-spattered possessions lie dumped on the street; their homes will be bulldozed.

Billy Hague, 30, described paddling around the neighborhood looking for his missing 85-year-old uncle, James Rossi, who refused to evacuate before the storm.

"I kayaked back to the house and broke the windows and got in the house trying to find him," he said. "I found the dog, but I didn't find him until the next day until the waters subsided."

Rossi was among the 19 Staten Islanders claimed by the storm. His dog also drowned.

Hague, Clarkin and other now-homeless family members are bunking with relatives who live on higher ground, just beyond the reach of the devastating ocean waves. They have no idea where they will live. They do not have the money to rebuild their homes.

But they have each other. Amid the debris and the broken glass and the uprooted trees, an American flag blew in the breeze. Clarkin waved a dismissive hand at the scene of destruction. She considers herself one of the lucky ones.

"People perished," she said. "This is stuff. That's all."
