How to use Notification Center

If you just got a new iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad then you've also got Notification Center. It's Apple's attempt to bring order and sanity to the myriad alarms, alerts, messages, calls, announcements, and game challenges that flood our daily lives. But first you may need to bring order and sanity to Notification Center.

How Notification Center works

iOS notifications are presented in one of three different ways:

  • Lock screen notifications
  • Notification Center
  • Banners and popups

All of the implementations show the icon of the app issuing the notification to the left, and a brief except of the alert content to the right. All three, however, work in different ways.

How Lock screen notifications work

If your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad is asleep (i.e. the screen is dark), Lock screen notifications will light it up briefly and show it to you. That way, if your device is sitting on a table nearby, you'll see the notification come in and be able to deal with it immediately if you want to. If you don't want to deal with a notification immediately, the Lock screen will keep a list of all the new ones for you, and show them to you the next time you wake up your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.

Depending on how many notifications come in, and what kind of notifications they are, you'll be presented with them in one of a few different ways.

  • If it's a single notification, you get a single popup.
  • If it's multiple notifications, you get a stacked list view.
  • If it's a single notification but there have been previous unread notifications, you get a single popup but can view the complete list by swiping down from the time/date bar (a small gripper icon indicates when this is possible.)
  • If it's a notification along with an option, for example an alarm with a snooze option, a button will also appear for that action.

You can slide notification icons to unlock your iPhone, iPod, or iPad, just as you would the normal slide to unlock control. Unlocking with the icon will send you straight to the app that issued the alert, and to the specific alert within that app.

Once you unlock, you also clear all Lock screen notifications.

Notification Center

When you're using your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad you can pull down Notification Center at any time by swiping downwards from the status bar. It can be dismissed by swiping back up from the small gripper icon at the bottom of the screen.

When Notification Center is open, it can display a Weather and/or Stocks widgets on the iPhone or iPod touch, and a Sharing widget on all iOS devices. (Because the iPad has no built-in Weather or Stocks apps, it has no Weather or Stock widgets in Notification Center.) If you don't like the location shown in the Weather widget, or the stocks listed in the Stock widget, or if you just want to turn one or all of them off entirely, you can configure them in the Settings app.

Tapping the Weather or Stock widget will take you to the Weather or Stocks app. Tapping the Twitter or Facebook button on the Sharing widget will open a Tweet or Facebook post sheet.

On all iOS devices, Notification Center can also display a list of pending notifications. Each list is headed by the corresponding app icon and name to the left, the date if it's for the calendar, and a far-too-tiny X icon to the right. If you don't like the default organization, you can change it in Settings app.

Tapping the X icon clears all notifications for that app. Tapping anywhere on the alert will take you to the app to view the information. You can control which apps and how many notifications per app are displayed in Settings.

Banners and popups

When your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad is unlocked and new notification comes in, a banner or popup notification will appear.

Banner notifications are typically used for non-urgent notifications like messages, mail, game challenges -- even turn-by-turn navigation directions. They show up briefly at the top of the screen and are animated with a roll down, roll back up effect. Tapping a Notification Banner sends you to the app that issued the alert and shows you the information. While far less obtrusive than the old-style popup notifications, the Banners can still obscure information and obstruct buttons, and when they roll-down unexpectedly can cause you to accidentally tap them rather then the top bar or button you'd begun to tap.

If a banner is getting in your way, you can touch them, pull slightly, and flick them away (technically you're beginning to pull down the Notification Center shade, which dismisses them, and then pushing the shade away again all in one smooth curve.

Popups are usually used for urgent notifications like alarms, reminders, and appointments. They pop up in the center of the screen and won't go away until you acknowledge you received them.

If you don't want popups or banners for a certain app, you can turn them off in Settings or if you just want to mute them temporarily, you can use Do Not Disturb.

Textbooks Create Debt

The promise that was made by Baby Boomers to Generations X and Y, flatly stating ?College Degrees=Good-Paying Careers?, is no longer valid. This is evidenced by the stubborn unemployment rate, the Occupy?movements and continuing legislation which is aimed at reducing the repayment obligations of students for the first few years out of college (e.g. Higher Education Opportunity Act; College Cost Reduction and Access Act).

According to the?National Center for Education Statistics?approximately 39% of all undergraduates were receiving financial aid in the form of student loans in 2008.? The average amount received in the academic year 2007-2008 was $9,100.? Approximately 47% of all undergrads were receiving some form of aid in 2007-2008, the average amount being $6,600.? (Note: this does not include loans which parents take out on behalf of students.)

Taking a look at costs, it is easy to see where a large chunk of that borrowed money is going ??textbooks.? The average cost of a textbook varies depending on year-published and subject-matter.? The median range of annual textbook costs are reported in numerous sources as being $700-$1,100, including the 2008 Washington Post?special report?entitled "Break on Cost of Textbooks Unlikely Before Last Bell".? Some quick number crunching: $4,000 = total textbook cost over undergraduate years; 7% = student loan interest; 5 years=repayment period.

Estimating these numbers a student would have to pay $81.30/month for 5 years to simply pay for his or her textbooks.??This does not even touch on the actual cost of education yet.

My research into McGraw-Hill and Pearson, utilizing search results of Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, McGraw-Hill's and Pearson's Course Catalogs (2011), produced similar results, depending on your major.? Below is the average cost of a textbook.? The same textbooks were used across all three services (Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and the retail price):

Science (Data)?

  • Barnes and Noble (online): $155.05?
  • Retail price (reported by Barnes and Noble online): $177.44

Mathematics (Data)?

  • Barnes and Noble (online): $149.23?
  • Retail price (reported by Barnes and Noble online): $165.10?

Humanities (Data)?

  • Barnes and Noble: $79.30?
  • Retail price (reported by Barnes and Noble online): $92.28?

Please keep in mind that my numbers reflect new textbooks only.? If you are lucky enough to snag used textbooks before they are sold out, or if you are lucky enough to have a professor who does not constantly insist on the newest version available, then costs would be lower. Reducing textbook costs would make a remarkable difference to a student who needs financial aid.? Many options exist: renting textbooks, used books, e-textbooks and some even consider not buying the textbook an option.? It is time to use these options keeping the student in mind.? Textbooks do create more debt -- but they don't have to.?

An old insect pest reemerges in organic orchards

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? The apple flea weevil, a sporadic insect pest in the early 1900s, has reemerged as a severe pest in organic apple orchards in Michigan, where outbreak population levels have been observed since 2008, and damage has resulted in up to 90% losses for apple growers.

According to the authors of "The Reemergence of an Old Pest, Orchestes pallicornis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)," an open-access article appearing in the lastest issue of the Journal of Integrated Pest Management, the weevil can be managed by broad-spectrum insecticides used in conventional agriculture, but there are currently no proven management options for use in organic production. And, as broad-spectrum materials are replaced by reduced-risk compounds, it is possible that the apple flea weevil will increasingly become an important pest in apple production.

The apple flea weevil is a small, 2-3 millimeter black weevil with enlarged high legs for jumping. Adults feed on buds and leaves, and the larvae are leaf miners.

In the article, the authors discuss the apple flea weevil's biology and the damage it does to plants, as well as methods for growers to monitor and manage them.

(AP Photo/Brennan Linsley, File)

(AP) ? Afghan Army Sgt. Habibullah Hayar didn't know it, but he had been sleeping with his enemy for weeks.

Twenty days ago, one of his roommates was arrested for allegedly plotting an insider attack against their unit, which is partnered with NATO forces in eastern Paktia province.

Afghan soldiers and policemen ? or militants in their uniforms ? have gunned down more than 50 foreign troops so far this year, eroding the trust between coalition forces and their Afghan partners. An equal number of Afghan policemen and soldiers also died in these attacks, giving them reason as well to be suspicious of possible infiltrators within their ranks.

"It's not only foreigners. They are targeting Afghan security forces too," said the 21-year-old Hayar, who was in Kabul on leave. "Sometimes, I think what kind of situation is this that a Muslim cannot trust a Muslim ? even a brother cannot trust a brother. It's so confused. Nobody knows what's going on."

The attacks are taking a toll on the partnership, prompting the U.S. military to restrict operations with small-sized Afghan units earlier this month.

The close contact ? with coalition forces working side by side with Afghan troops as advisers, mentors and trainers ? is a key part of the U.S. strategy for putting the Afghans in the lead as the U.S. and other nations prepare to pull out their last combat troops at the end of 2014, just 27 months away.

The U.S. military also has shown increasing anger over the attacks.

"I'm mad as hell about them, to be honest with you," Gen. John Allen, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, told CBS' "60 Minutes" in an interview scheduled to be broadcast on Sunday. "It reverberates everywhere across the United States. You know, we're willing to sacrifice a lot for this campaign, but we're not willing to be murdered for it."

So far this year, 51 foreign troops ? at least half of them Americans ? have been killed in insider attacks. The Afghan government has not provided statistics on the number of its forces killed in insider attacks. However, U.S. military statistics obtained by The Associated Press show at least 53 members of the Afghan security forces had been killed as of the end of August.

A U.S. military official disclosed the numbers on condition of anonymity because he said it was up to Afghan officials to formally release the figures. An Afghan defense official who was shown the statistics said he had no reason to doubt their accuracy.

Overall, the statistics show that at least 135 Afghan policemen and soldiers have been killed in insider attacks since 2007. That's more than the 118 foreign service members ? mostly Americans ? killed in such attacks since then, according to NATO.

Typically, foreign troops are the main targets, but Afghan forces also have been killed by comrades angry over their collaboration with Westerners and many more get killed in the crossfire, Defense Ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi said. He said the ministry did not have a breakdown of how many had been targeted or killed in gunbattles during the attacks.

In at least one instance, an Afghan police officer with alleged ties to militants, killed 10 of his fellow officers on Aug. 11 at a checkpoint in southwestern Nimroz province. An Afghan soldier also was killed on April 25 when a fellow soldier opened fire on a U.S. service member and his translator in Kandahar province, the southern birthplace of the Taliban.

Last year, a suicide bomber in an Afghan police uniform blew himself up May 28 in Takhar province, killing two NATO service members and four Afghans, including a senior police commander. And just a week before that, four Taliban fighters wearing suicide vests under police uniforms attacked a government building in Khost province, triggering a gunbattle that left three Afghan policemen and two Afghan soldiers dead. On April 16, an Afghan soldier walked into a meeting of NATO trainers and Afghan troops in Laghman province, blew himself up, killing five U.S. troops, four Afghan soldiers and an interpreter.

"It's difficult to know an attacker from a non-attacker when everybody is wearing a uniform, Hayar said.

The attacker was one of seven people rounded up earlier this month from various units within the Afghan National Army Corps 203, Hayar said. The corps covers the eastern Afghan provinces of Paktia, Paktika, Ghazni, Wardak, Logar and Khost.

"He was together with me in my room with some of my other colleagues. He had a long beard. We didn't know anything about him. We were living together, sleeping together," said Hayar, who has been in the Afghan army for 2 1/2 years.

He said the suspected infiltrator was identified after a Taliban militant arrested in Logar told his Afghan interrogators that members of the fundamentalist Islamic movement had infiltrated the corps and were planning imminent attacks. That prompted Hayar's superiors to start questioning soldiers in various units.

Hayar said his roommate's uneasy reaction raised suspicion, and investigators found Taliban songs saved to the memory card of his cell phone. He was then detained by Afghan intelligence officials and confessed he was a member of the Taliban and planned to stage attacks.

Hayar says he assumes his former bunkmate was probably going after foreign forces, but it makes him uncomfortable nevertheless.

"It's very hard to trust anybody ? even a roommate," he said. "Whenever I'm not on duty, I lock my weapon and keep the key myself. I don't put my weapon under my pillow to sleep because maybe someone will grab it and shoot me with my own weapon."

To counter such attacks, the U.S. military earlier this year stopped training about 1,000 members of the Afghan Local Police, a controversial network of village-defense units. U.S. commanders have assigned some troops to be "guardian angels" who watch over their comrades even as they sleep. U.S. officials also recently ordered American troops to carry loaded weapons at all time, even when they are on their bases.

Then, after a string of insider attacks, Allen this month restricted operations carried out alongside with small-sized Afghan units. Coalition troops have routinely conducted patrols or manned outposts with small groups of Afghan counterparts, but Allen's directive said such operations would no longer be considered routine and required the approval of the regional commander.

For their part, Afghan authorities have detained or removed hundreds of soldiers as part of its effort to re-screen its security forces. The Ministry of Defense also released a 28-page training booklet this month that advises soldiers not to be personally offended when foreign troops do things Afghans view as deeply insulting.

The booklet urges them not to take revenge for foreign troops' social blunders, such as blowing their noses in public, stepping into a mosque with their shoes on, walking in front of a soldier who is praying or asking about their wives.

"Most of the coalition members are interested to share pictures of their families. It is not a big deal for them. If someone asks you about your family, especially the females in your family, don't think they are disrespecting you or trying to insult you," the booklet says.

"That is not the case. By asking such questions, they are trying to show that they want to learn more about you. You can very easily explain to them that nobody in Afghanistan would ask, especially about wives or females in the family."

The Year of the Short Sale | NJ Real Estate Law

Chances are you have heard the term short sale before. If you are in a predicament where you owe more on your mortgage than your house is worth, you may have considered or are considering just such a short sale solution. ?Many New Jersey residents are in the same boat.

That is why 2011 and 2012 may well be remembered as ?the years of the short sale.? Through the first six months of 2012, Fannie Mae (the giant lending institution) completed 38,717 short sales, and in 2011 it completed 70,025 entirely.

To top it off, The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) recently announced there will be new guidelines going into effect Nov. 1, 2012 for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac that will make it easier for mortgage services to consolidate all short sale programs into one streamlined approach and to better serve the sellers in a timely manner.

What these new short sale rules will do is allow lenders to more easily qualify someone for a short sale and homeowners will be able to know sooner if they are in fact eligible for a short sale.

Summary of Short Sale Guidelines

Some of the new short sale guidelines going into effect Nov. 1 are as follows:

? ????????? Short Sale Even If You Are Current On Your Mortgage ? if you have a mortgage backed by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, the new rules state that, even if you are current on your mortgage, you could qualify for a short sale. This is if you meet the criteria for a hardship under the rules: namely, divorce or legal separation, the death of a borrower or co-borrower, illness or disability, or a distant employment transfer.

? ????????? No Deficiency- Homeowners will be able to make a financial contribution at closing in lieu of having the lender pursue them for a deficiency judgment. There are other ways to seek no deficiencies; you should consult with one of our experienced short sale lawyers to learn more.

? ????????? Military Personnel ? military personnel being relocated will be automatically eligible for a short sale and will not have to be responsible for any deficiency between the sale price and the amount owed on the mortgage.

? ????????? Second Lien Holders ? Subordinate lien holders will not be able to collect more than $6000. In the past these second or third lien holders would try to negotiate higher payments from the homeowner.

? ????????? Relocation Expense ? You may even be able to collect up to $3000 in relocation assistance from the lender to assist in a move.

What Your Lender Must Do

The FHFA has also recently announced new guidelines for lenders. Here are a few of the more pertinent ones:
? ????????? The lender must respond to a short sale offer within 30 days of receiving such offer.
? ????????? The lender must provide weekly updates to the borrowers.
? ????????? The lender must communicate a final decision on the sale to the borrower within 60 of receipt of the offer.

Anyone facing mortgage trouble should understand these new short sale guidelines make it easier to navigate selling your home under difficult conditions, provided you have the right professional assistance.

XXX search engine helps parents block porn

4 hrs.

There's a new (Web) address for all things X-rated. ICM, the company behind Search.xxx, Thursday launched its porn-only search engine that corrals porn sites inside a single .xxx domain.

While some members of the porn industry weren't too happy with Internet authority Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' (ICANN) decision to authorize the xxx master domain, it may help parents prevent curious kids from seeing adult material.

ICM has made its launch page as convenient as possible for the user ? with no ads, a big search box and three buttons to select a language, a sexual orientation and a light or dark screen (the latter is preferred by experts for?nighttime reading ). The only protection is an age gate that asks users to indicate whether they're 18 years of age or older ? standard protocol on the Internet ? and insufficient to prevent minors from accessing it.

Many porn site operators are using the new .xxx extension. Parents can block this top-level domain from browsers used on family computers and other devices.

Metacerf, the security software company that has partnered with ICM to identify adult pages, offers a free plug-in for Firefox and Chrome?browsers ?that block .xxx websites, as well as other pages found to have adult content. (Porn sites were allowed to keep their .com addresses, so porn can still be found outside the .xxx domain.) A version for Internet Explorer and Safari will be released soon. And, Metacerf also has a family-friendly browser in the works, called Olly, for iPad and iPhone devices.

It's worth mentioning that you can also block .xxx and any other sites you find objectionable from?Google search results. Open a Google search page, click the gear icon at the upper right of the page to select options and then select "search settings." Scroll down the page and click the link "block unwanted sites." Type search.xxx in the box and click the Block button. Competing search engine Bing does not allow users to block specific sites, but like Google, it offers filters designed to eliminate showing links to adult material in search results.

To set the Bing and Google Search filters to "strict," go into your search settings by clicking on the gear icon. Choose "search settings" to see your filter options and set to "strict." That's it for Bing, but Google also lets you lock in your choice. While it's not really a lock that keeps kids from changing the stricter filter, it does add a big graphic element that indicates safe settings are on and sites are blocked. Big bouncing balls at the top of every search page are easy to see even from across the room.

USP announces 2012-2013 fellowships

Rockville, Md., September 27, 2012 ? Since the program's inception more than thirty years ago, USP has invested nearly $4 million in over 200 fellowship awards.

"Advances in science and technology often arise from the work of young researchers attempting to find cutting-edge solutions to problems," said Roger L. Williams, M.D., USP's chief executive officer. "Through our fellowship program, USP seeks to support innovative thinking and approaches to global challenges associated with medicine and food quality. The current awardees demonstrate the exemplary talent, dedication, and insight that will help meet these challenges."

USP is a nonprofit scientific organization that seeks to improve the health of people around the world through public standards and related programs that help ensure the quality, safety and benefit of medicines and foods. Each year, USP conducts a competitive process for selecting fellows who are engaged in full-time study in a Ph.D. or Pharm. D. program, medical school or dental school, and whose works are directly relevant to USP's priorities.

For the 2012-2013 academic year, three $50,000 USP Global Fellowship awards have been presented to the following students:

  • Darash Desai, Ph.D. candidate, Boston University, Department of Biomedical Engineering
Area of Research -- Counterfeit and substandard drug detector for the developing world. Current strategies to accurately screen for counterfeit and substandard medicines often require tests that are technically challenging and costly to employ in resource-limited countries in the developing world. Also, there is no chemical technology currently available that can provide a quantitative and accurate analysis of a drug's active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) content as well as profile its dissolution properties. Mr. Desai's research has helped to develop a screening platform based on a highly quantitative and sensitive microfluidic fluorescence system. This work has the potential to help support the development of an affordable and portable tool capable of determining API content in a drug as well as real-time release of the API from its tablet formulation.

  • Jose Napolitano, Ph.D., University of Illinois at Chicago, College of Pharmacy, Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy
Area of Research -- New generation of 1H NMR fingerprints for the rapid analysis of pharmacopeial reference standards. Dr. Napolitano's research involves the development of a method based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis of small organic molecules in a wide variety of materials, including pharmaceuticals, food ingredient, dietary supplement and botanicals. The basis of this approach is the use of 1H NMR spectroscopy and computer-aided spectral analysis to create 1H NMR "fingerprints" of substances of interest. 1H NMR allows for simultaneous evaluation of multiple components and can provide a large amount of structural information at the molecular level, making it a powerful approach for purity and stability studies. 1H NMR fingerprinting has broad potential for single instrument/measurement approaches to chemical identification and quantitation of complex materials such as food ingredients and botanicals.

  • Ting Wang, Ph.D. candidate, University of Maryland at Baltimore, School of Pharmacy
Area of Research -- Developing the scientific basis for the application of spectroscopic and chemometric methods to excipient identification and adulteration detection. USP is actively engaged in efforts to modernize its standards for small molecule drugs and excipients, in part, by replacing non-specific procedures for identification with more specific methods. Ms. Wang's work focuses on the use of spectroscopy and chemometric methods to characterize excipients. Used as raw materials in many drug products, excipients have a profound influence on their efficacy, stability and manufacturability. Excipient products can also be extremely variable among multiple suppliers, grades and even lots. Ms. Wang's research shows how the combination of spectroscopy and chemometric methods can be used as a rapid technique for identifying and evaluating the physio-chemical properties of these important raw materials in drug products.

Each of the Global Fellows will communicate regularly with a scientific liaison from USP headquarters in Rockville., Md., providing updates on his or her work and the relevance of its progress to USP's priorities. In addition, each fellow will be invited to give a poster presentation at a USP-sponsored meeting or event during the course of the academic year.

Cops: Carjacker drives pregnant girlfriend to hospital

Volusia County Corrections via NBC Miami

By NBC News staff

A central Florida man carjacked a driver in a desperate attempt to get his pregnant girlfriend to the hospital, the Volusia County Sheriff?s Office said Monday.

Robert Boudreaux, 31, of Deltona allegedly walked into the path of a car to force it to stop, and threatened to shoot the driver if he didn't give him and his 22-year-old girlfriend a ride. He later forced the driver out at a red light, the sheriff?s office said in a statement, and got behind the wheel.

For more visit NBCMiami.com

The couple's saga started when the girlfriend's car ran out of gas in DeLand, she told police. A friend picked them up and dropped them off in the town of Deltona, only a few miles away. The couple then walked for several miles, and the woman started to feel dehydrated and began to bleed, the sheriff's office said. Volusia County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Brandon Haught told NBC News that police did not know where the couple was going.

Around noon, Boudreaux tried unsuccessfully to flag down cars on North Normandy Boulevard, the sheriff's office said. When that failed, Boudreaux allegedly turned to carjacking.

When the vehicle's 20-year-old driver stopped at a red light at the intersection of North Normandy and Elkcam Boulevards, ?Boudreaux again got angry and ordered the driver to run the light,? the sheriff?s office said. ?The driver refused and Boudreaux grabbed the driver?s seat belt, using it to force him back against the seat while Boudreaux yelled that he would shoot the driver if he didn?t get out.?

The man got out of his car and Boudreaux drove off, while the man called 911. The driver told police he never actually saw a gun, the sheriff?s office added.

Deputies quickly spotted the car. They said Boudreaux used a turning lane to pass other vehicles and erratically shifted between lanes as he refused to stop.

Even after he pulled into the parking lot of Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City, Boudreaux continued to evade authorities until the car he was driving was trapped by patrol cars, the sheriff?s office said.

He was taken into custody and faces charges of armed carjacking, fleeing or eluding and driving with a suspended license, according to the sheriff?s office. It was not immediately clear whether he has an attorney.

Deputies took the girlfriend to the hospital?s emergency room, where she was treated for heat exhaustion and later released. She told them she tried to get Boudreaux to stop and does not face any charges, the sheriff?s office said.

Employee Outsourcing for Effortless Business Development

Employee outsourcing is one of the alternatives that is cheaper on the administrative side of the part. This replaces the employee-employer relationship old school method and lets one focus on the development of a specific business and it relieves the administration of the responsibilities that were once hectic. When it comes to employee outsourcing most of the work that deals with the administrative part of the story is being transferred to an organization which is a PEO or professional employment organization who takes care of it. This acts as the human resource development organization and does the job for the administration while they can be relaxed over it.

Old mansion gives glimpse into the oil boom of Whittier

Nestled among apartment buildings above Beverly Boulevard rests a two-story seven- room mansion that goes unnoticed. Outside of the Comstock Apartments on the 5800 block of Comstock Avenue are columns from a gazebo originally in front of the mansion. What lies behind is the home originally built by oilman William Loftus in 1911.

"We do get people that come up, usually older folks who know about the house," said apartment manager, Veronica Wilkerson. "I can usually tell that they are here to see the house."

The house is adorned with three bathrooms, hardwood floors, hand-carved wood and sliding pocket doors that separate rooms.

"One of the most spectacular things about this house is the stained glass panel," said Wilkerson. "It has been reported that it is an unsigned original Dale Tiffany."

It also has a stained glass dome, that is in the ceiling above the staircase, depicting scenes from the area.

Although the house has been divided into apartments, much of the elegant decor has been preserved. They found gold leaf details that had been painted over as well as some other wood features.

The house is divided into seven rental units that share the bathrooms and a kitchen.

Wilkerson says that the current owners, who built that 24-unit apartments around the house, fought to keep the house after they were told to demolish it by the city.
