VoIP call centers are added social media for better communication.

Given the growing presence of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) initiatives and a remote workforce, keeping employees connected is becoming harder. A new study shows that to cater to the mobile employees and their devices, VoIP call-centers are adding social media features to stay connected.

The report, "VoIP Call Centers Adapt to a BYOD World," is from independent research firm Heavy Reading. For the study, Heavy Reading looked at a number of companies including ShoreTel, and found that as employees use their personal and mobile devices for work related needs, they expect to be able to communicate in their prefered way, whether it be through voice, email, IM or a social media network.

"VoIP call centers have evolved from an infancy of simple interactive voice response units to complex communications platforms that enable customers to communicate with customer service through a variety of devices and networks," said Denise Culver, the author of the report.

Too often, the report found, service providers created separate applications for voice and other customer communication tools. By integrating social media, call centers are taking a step closer to a unified communications solution that will streamline communication across all platforms and devices allowing employees in any part of the business to be heard in their prefered way, while also cutting the costs that go along with the need for additional service channels.

This is the final installment of creative ideas from the June 2012 issue of Fast Company featuring its list of?The 100 Most Creative People in Business 2012. India set for sweeping protests at petrol price rise

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indian opposition parties planned a national strike on Thursday in protest against the steepest petrol price rise in the country's history, seeking to exploit popular anger with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's embattled coalition government.

Protests, marches and road blocks were planned across the country. The strike could reduce public transport and hit government offices, colleges, firms and industrial plants, but because it is not centrally organized its impact will differ from state to state.

"It will be a total shutdown across the country. It will be the biggest democratic protest the country has seen in a long time," said Prakash Javdekar, a leader of the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won nearly 19 percent of the vote in the 2009 election.

Strike calls in India have had mixed results in the past, and it was not clear how many people would respond on the day. A strong turnout could indicate popular dissatisfaction with Singh's two-term, Congress Party-led government.

The day of action - or "bandh" - called by the BJP and smaller left-wing parties is not a threat to the survival of Singh's government, but it does underscore the difficulty he faces trying to implement unpopular economic reforms.

The backlash over the petrol price increase has already unnerved the government, prompting it to drop any immediate plans to raise the price of heavily subsidized diesel and kerosene, a move investors have been pushing for to narrow the budget deficit.

The coalition, weakened by a string of corruption scandals and infighting that has stymied reforms, faces mounting criticism over its management of the economy.

Investors and economists cheered its decision last week to allow state-controlled oil companies to increase petrol prices for the first time in six months, enabling them to recover some of the losses they had racked up due to higher oil prices and a plunging rupee.

But the roughly 11 percent increase sparked public protests and some of the Congress party's coalition partners have tried to distance themselves from the decision.

Congress's second-biggest ally in parliament, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, briefly threatened to quit the government on Wednesday if the increase was not trimmed, showing why decision-making is so hard in New Delhi.

PARTIAL ROLLBACK POSSIBLE

The government and the state oil companies have already opened the way to a partial rollback of the petrol price increase of 6.28 rupees per liter, excluding taxes.

The head of the Indian Oil Company, R.S. Butola, strongly hinted last week that the increase might be trimmed on June 1, when state oil companies will review their charges based on international oil prices and the exchange rate

The BJP controls seven of India's 28 states, including the industrial hub of Gujarat and Karnataka, which is home to Bangalore, India's "Silicon Valley".

A spokesman for computer-chip maker Intel Corp, which has about 3,200 employees in India, most of them in Bangalore, said the company had asked staff to work from home.

Google Inc. and Infosys, which also have a large presence in Bangalore, said it would be "business as usual" for them.

In Mumbai, India's financial capital, the ruling Shiv Sena party, a BJP ally, said residents "should not venture out of their houses" on Thursday. But banks said they anticipated no disruption as buses and trains were expected to run normally.

In the BJP-ruled state of Himachal Pradesh, the chief minister said he would show his support for the protest by walking to work on Thursday rather than taking his official car.

New Delhi-based political analyst Amulya Ganguli said the political impact of Thursday's strike would be muted.

"For people in India it will be a holiday. So they will take advantage of the call for a bandh to stay away from work," he predicted.

Asim Das, a 50-year-old electrician who travels to Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, by suburban train every day, said he had been shocked by the price rise but would not join the strike.

"I cannot afford to miss a day's earnings because of a strike which serves only the politicians," he said.

Dell XPS One 2710

There are more 27-inch all-in-one desktops on the market these days, but very few are worth big bucks. Some fall short on the visuals, while others fall short on the sound. The Dell XPS One 2710 ($1,999 direct) manages to put almost every technology and feature we're looking for in a compact and stylish chassis. And it has excellent performance, thanks to its new Core i7 (Ivy Bridge) processor and Nvidia GeForce (Kepler) graphics. If you're a media enthusiast, this is the desktop you're looking for. It's our new Editors' Choice for high-end all-in-one desktop PCs.

Design and Features
The newest XPS One gives up the previous two-peg leg and easel design in favor of a cleaner base and hinged arm design. The computer's internal components are built into the screen chassis, connected to the base via that hinged arm. The hinge gives the user a decent amount of tilt, accommodating most seated and standing positions. The base doesn't swivel, and there's no height adjustment, so it's not necessarily perfect, but you will get similar viewing angles as the HP Omni 27 ($1,249 direct, 4 stars) and Apple iMac 27-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,999 list, 4 stars). The screen itself is crisp and bright with decent viewing angles and 2,560 by 1,440 resolution. The screen is large enough to work as a mid-sized HDTV as well as a large screen all-in-one desktop PC.

There's an antenna jack on the back and built-in TV Tuner for over-the-air broadcasts. The HDMI-in port will work with settop boxes from your cable company, and the system comes with an IR blaster to control those settop boxes. The front panel has a touch-sensitive and backlit row of soft keys. The soft keys control onscreen functions like brightness, contrast, etc. The top-mounted HD webcam can be switched off with a physical switch, handy for the privacy-obsessed. You can also use the webcam for logging into the system, once the facial recognition software learns your face. Like other all-in-ones with screens that float above the base, you can store the keyboard under the screen when you're not using it.

Feature-wise, the XPS One 2710 has made quite a few intelligent choices. For one, Dell has jettisoned USB 2.0 ports entirely. Instead, this system has six USB 3.0 ports. This helps eliminate end user confusion, as there is no "wrong" port for your speedy external USB 3.0 hard drive (remember: USB 3.0 ports are still backward-compatible to USB 2.0 devices). One of the two side-mounted USB ports is a "Sleep Charge" port which will remain active even though the system is off. That way, you can charge your tablet or phone.

About the only nits I could find are that the USB 3.0 ports aren't colored blue as they are on many USB 3.0 hard drives. It's a minor nit, since all of the USB ports are USB 3.0, but the practice still bucks current usability trends. The HDMI-in port helps extend the life of the monitor even after the internal CPU is obsolete, and the system also comes with HDMI-out, which lets you extend the usable workspace in Windows with a second monitor.

The system comes with an internal power supply, so there's no power brick cluttering up your floor. Our review unit came with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, so you can use the less crowded 5GHz bands for better performance (though you need a router is also 5GHz capable to use if you want to use the 5GHz bands). There's an IR remote for the built-in TV tuner, and the slot-loading optical drive is a Blu-ray player, so you're covered for entertainment options. Speaking of entertainment, the XPS One eschews the trend of tinny speakers and low-volume level found on some all-in-one desktops like the Asus ET2700INKS-B062C ($1,499 list, 3.5 stars). The sound coming from the XPS One 2710 was forceful and distortion-free. Dell uses Waves MaxxAudio 4 sound enhancement (think Beats without Dre) technology, and it's very effective.

The system comes with no bloatware icons on the desktop when you first boot it up. This is good because you want less clutter, not more. The included 2TB hard drive is plenty for the average family user, and you can add more with the USB 3.0 ports (with an external hard drive). The 32GB mSATA SSD is a MiniPCIe-sized board that works with Intel's Smart Response Technology (SRT) to boot the system quickly, load apps quickly, and come back from sleep quickly. Essentially, the 32GB SSD acts like a hybrid drive with the 2TB main drive. You can't see the SSD in Windows as a separate drive, but you will feel the extra performance compared to a similar system without SRT. The XPS One 2710 comes with a standard one-year warranty.

Performance
The new quad-core Core i7-3770s processor in the XPS One and the SRT-optimized drive setup garner high scores on the benchmark tests. The XPS One leaves older systems like the Apple iMac, HP Omni 27, and HP TouchSmart 620-1080 3D ($1,899 direct, 4 stars) in the dust on the PCMark 7 benchmark, which measures whole-system performance. Likewise, the new Nvidia GeForce GT 640M GPU helps the XPS One gain playable scores on Crysis (70 fps) and Lost Planet 2 (46 fps) at medium settings. While the XPS One does well at the 3D tests, the AMD Radeon HD 6970 in the iMac helps it stay on top at 3D tests. The Dell XPS One rivals the iMac on multimedia tasks, however. The Dell's 1:09 time on our Handbrake video encoder test and 2:53 on the Photoshop CS5 test are quicker than the iMac and HP Omni 27. Suffice to say the XPS One is one fast desktop PC.

The last Editors' Choice for high-end all-in-one desktops is the HP TouchSmart 610-1065qd ($1,789.99 list, 5 stars). Though that system has a touchscreen and innovative tilt mechanism, both technologies aren't really necessary for the type of user that wants the best multimedia enjoyment desktop on the market, which is what the Dell XPS One 2710 represents. The XPS One 2710 gives the entertainment enthusiast great sound, sparkling video, a plethora of media sources (Internet streaming, Blu-ray, downloads, OTA TV tuner), an attractive chassis, plus the power to create her own media content. The target point changes from time to time, but for now, the high-end all-in-one desktop to beat is our new Editors' Choice, the Dell XPS One 2710.

When Children Use Dirty Words : Ideas for Women Home and ...

It has happened to all of us. We are out somewhere and for whatever reason our four year old decides to use a four letter word. So what can you do when your child uses a word that they shouldn?t. First and foremost remain calm. Don?t fly ff the handle because kids will pick up on that using that particular word gets you? upset and gets your attention.

Next ask them why they said that word. find out what the the reason behind using that particular word is. Then ask where they heard that word. I hate to say it but nine times out of ten they hear dirty words from parents. we don?t realize we don it sometimes until our children remind us. If your child is old enough to understand explain to them that using words such as those are not polite and that when adults (including you) use them you are being rude.

We tell our children those are grown-up words, not very nice ones but not something that good, politer children should say. If your child is too young to understand the meaning behind those words try to ignore the word all together. It could be they heard the word, repeated, and will never say it again. In the event the word does get used more often then address the issue.

Wash. State loses one recruit; College hoops recruiting notes

Two incoming recruits from Westwind Prep (AZ), center Richard Peters?and wing DeMarquise Johnson?both were expected to be part of the groundwork that head coach Ken Bone was setting at Washington State going forward. Now, Peters has apparently failed to qualify, and will be headed to a junior college, while Cougars? fans are still holding out hope that Johnson will be able to be on the squad next year.

Washington State has compensated for the loss of Peters by adding Iowa State transfer Jordan Railey and junior college post James Hunter, but the former Oklahoma commit Peters was considered to be a big man with potential going forward. The same can be said for Johnson, who might be the best pure talent on Washington State?s roster, if he qualifies. It seems as if Washington State fans will be holding their breath for awhile, as the NCAA has been known to drag such issues out for months.

In other news from the recruiting trail:

• Fordham is still trying to find their role in a re-formulated Atlantic-10, and they recently put out a press release detailing the four players who signed with their program going forward. 6?-8? power forward Travion Leonard, 6?-1? point guard Jermaine Myers, 6?-3? shooting guard Mandell Thomas and 6?-9? power forward Ryan Rhoomes are the newcomers announced by the Rams program. Rhoomes, was originally set for TCU this season, but was not able to play following a prep school season at NIA Prep (NJ). If he can shake off the rust, he?s the headliner of this group.
• The loss of guard Willie Moore (Oregon) and forward Donovon Jack (Penn State) from the initial recruiting class at Duquesne will have to be overcome, but new coach Jim Ferry has inked four new players during his short time at the helm. Junior college guard Marvin Binney and high school guards Jeremiah Jones and Derrick Colter cast their lot with the program, while former Baylor commit (from several years ago) small forward Quevyn Winters is also set for the program. There wasn?t much time to wrangle this group together, but Ferry did what he could.
• Both Boise State and Tulsa each have some buzz with recent players they snagged. 6?-9 forward?Vukasin Vujovic will join the Broncos from Serbia, where he?averaged?16 points and 5 rebounds on a junior team of Partizan, a Euroleague member. He?s a power forward with national team experience. Meanwhile, Rashad Ray of Walker (LA) has signed with Tulsa. He?s a 5?-11? point guard that averaged 18 points and 7 assists according to a press release. According to Tulsa, Ray picked them over UTEP, Tulane and Louisiana Tech.

Smoke from a summer wildfire darkens the sky over New Mexico in 2011.

Lightning strikes sparked two wildfires in southwestern New Mexico that have merged and spread over 130 square miles, destroying more than a dozen structures.

With smoke and ash spreading over a wide area, health officials warned residents to limit outdoor activities as the Memorial Day holiday weekend unfolded. ?ARK

The Associated Press via The Guardian:

The fire burned early Saturday through remote and rugged terrain around the Gila Wilderness and has grown to 85,000 acres (34,400 hectares) or more than 130 square miles (338 square kilometers).

? More than 500 firefighters are battling the blaze that resulted from the merger earlier this week of two lightning-sparked fires. Fire officials say nearly all of the growth has come in recent days due to relentless winds.

The blaze has destroyed 12 cabins and seven small outbuildings, and the privately owned ghost town of Mogollon was placed under a voluntary evacuation order.

No Double-A team for Ottawa in 2013, mayor says

There will be no Double-A baseball in Ottawa next year, Mayor Jim Watson told city councillors Friday, but the 2014 season remains a possibility as long as council approves and agreements can be reached.

The city?s hopes of having a Toronto Blue Jays-affiliated team in the Double-A Eastern League were dashed this week, when the major-league team announced an extension of its relationship with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats through 2014.

There?s no chance of any Double-A team relocating to Ottawa for 2013, Watson wrote in a memo Friday before tweeting that ?we will continue to work to fill our great stadium.?

Beacon Sports Capital Partners, which had been working to get a lease from the city and to bring a team to Ottawa Stadium, told Watson in a letter Friday that, ?despite the best efforts of all parties involved, we have simply run out of time in terms of securing a lease and receiving appropriate Baseball approvals to relocate an Eastern League team to Ottawa for the 2013 Baseball season.?

Beacon still wants to work with the city to bring a team to Ottawa for 2014, wrote Richard Billings, its managing director and chief operating officer. For that to happen, the Eastern League needs ?basic agreements? between the city and Beacon by no later than Oct. 1 for its review and approval, Billings wrote.

?I would appreciate hearing formally from the city by late July or early August in relation to the possibility of negotiating a lease for the 2014 season,? he wrote.

In his memo, Watson wrote that council?s approval was needed to direct city manager Kent Kirkpatrick to work toward a lease agreement with Beacon for 2014. Kirkpatrick?s current mandate is to negotiate a lease only for 2013.

Watson is to bring the issue to council?s finance committee and council in the coming weeks ?in the hope of securing a mandate for the City to pursue negotiations with Beacon over the course of the coming months,? he wrote.

?It is my understanding that there is significant support around the Council table for the City to attempt to secure the ?highest and best use? for this important purpose-built facility,? the memo added. ?I look forward to working with my Council colleagues to fully explore this opportunity.?

City staff had said earlier this week that the parties were still in negotiations ?to complete and execute a lease agreement.? Council in February approved plans for a 10-year lease arrangement between the city and Beacon, with two five-year extension options.

Under the proposed agreement, each side would have spent more than $5 million to improve the stadium, bringing it up to minor-league standards, and to get a team operating.

Kirkpatrick recommends the city undertake some ?life cycle? work at the stadium this year, which would also require council approval, Watson wrote, adding that the scope of the work was to be presented to the finance committee and council.

There?s a silver lining in the news for the Ottawa Fat Cats team of the Intercounty Baseball League, who will be allowed to play their full 2012 season at the stadium instead of having to find somewhere else for playoff games, which would have been the case if the stadium was being renovated to get it ready in time for the 2013 Double-A season.

The Fat Cats? future at the stadium also remains open, according to the memo.

?Discussions concerning the use of the Ottawa Stadium for 2013 and beyond will appropriately require Council direction,? Watson wrote.

? Youth arts apprenticeship program runs June 18-Aug. 9

Rockford Area Arts Council is taking applications for ArtsPlace 2012, the summer arts apprenticeship program for youth ages 14-18. Applications will be accepted until seats are filled.

ArtsPlace will run from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., Mondays-Thursdays, June 18-Aug. 9, at Rockford College Clark Arts Center. ArtsPlace is a free program, supported by grants and donations. Bus transportation is provided, if needed.

ArtsPlace artists and teams are dance with Tamara Newquist, theater with Richard Raether, spoken-word poetry and/or jewelry with Tricia Sheridan, sculpture with Marco Basurto and painting with Maya Simmons. Printmaking artist Bruce McDonald is the on-site project director.

Youth work on teams directed by the artist and create original work that is performed and exhibited at the conclusion of the program. Apprentices share in the proceeds from ticket and art sales. Through the process of creating art, participants learn valuable work skills such as productivity, reliability, perseverance, respect and cooperation.
